Mazda’s little MX-5 sports car is a machine that gets the basics right. It’s not the most powerful car out there, but it’s light and agile with a rev-happy engine under the bonnet. Today there is a new special edition MX-5 that offers customers entry into a rarified club of just 150.
The Mazda MX-5 R-Sport is based on the 1.5-litre convertible model in Sport trim. It is mechanically identical to its two-seat siblings, but features Polymetal Grey paint and a matching fabric roof. Contrasting black mirrors and gunmetal 16-inch alloy wheel completes a stealthy appearance.
Another addition can be found in the cabin in the form of new burgundy nappa leather seats. These posts are neatly stitched together with contrasting silver thread that only serves to make the interior feel more grown-up. These R-Sport changes might seem insignificant in isolation, but together they give the car a more premium look.
Mazda UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: ‘The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products, its fun to drive character has strengthened the bond between Mazda and its customers for over 30 years and the 2020 model continues this unswerving dedication to delivering an affordable, engaging, world-class sports car, while the R-Sport continues our long heritage of offering uniquely styled yet affordable limited edition versions.’
The MX-5 R-Sport’s four-cylinder engine produces 130bhp and 112lb ft of torque, which might not sound a lot, but the car weights just over a tonne. 0-62mph takes 8.3 seconds while a top speed of 127mph is achievable.
If you’re quick enough to place an order for one of just 150 Mazda MX-5 R-Sports, you’ll also need £27,700.
