In October 2021, Mazda announced a massive SUV onslaught and said that the future high-riding models would have electrification satisfying the various emission norms in different regions. One of the upcoming electrified vehicles is the Mazda CX-60 PHEV compact SUV, and it will break cover on March 8, 2022.
Powertrain
In October 2021, Mazda had only confirmed that it would launch a Mazda CX-60 SUV. The company announced the PHEV system for the upcoming SUV and the (March 8, 2022) world premiere announcement on February 8.
Mazda has also used the latest announcement to disclose information about the CX-60’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. It says that the CX-60 PHEV will club a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor that together generate a system power of more than 300 hp. The company’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain employed in the Mazda CX-60 PHEV will provide “smooth, efficient and powerful acceleration.”
Design
In November 2021, spy shots of an announced Mazda SUV surfaced online, and it was evident that the mysterious model was the CX-60. These images suggested that the Mazda CX-60 has a fluidic design with curves and smooth surfaces, typical of the ‘zoom zoom’ brand.
At the front, the CX-60 features a familiar-looking radiator grille, curvy and compact LED headlamps, and a wing extending outward from the radiator grille. There’s a razor-sharp separate horizontal LED DRL placed inside the wing, and it forms a visual connection with the headlamps, as you can see in the teaser (featured image). The bumper has sporty cuts and vertical air inlets on its outer section. The lower air intake is a compact and simple-looking A-shaped unit.
On the sides, the Mazda CX-60 features round wheel arches, curvy mirrors, a chrome window surround, and a rectangular badge on the side of the front fenders. The roofline smoothly slopes down and finishes on the forward-leaning upper tailgate section at the rear. That, together with the sleek greenhouse, gives a dynamic appearance to the CX-60.

Mazda will target the CX-60 at European markets and Japan. The company is unlikely to launch it in the United States. The CX-60 PHEV will be the first of many Mazda PHEVs lined up for Europe. The European launch of the potential RAV4 Prime rival could take place in the second half of the year.
