It will be offered alongside the PHEV model.
Mazda has finally shared new details about what engine will sit under the hood of its upcoming CX-90 SUV, which will be revealed in full on February 1, 2023. We knew the 2023 Mazda CX-90 would offer the company's first hybrid system called e-Skyactiv PHEV, but now we can confirm it will also have a gas-only variant. The CX-90 will be the first US-bound Mazda to use the company's 3.3-liter inline-six e-Skyactiv Turbo engine. This is the same engine used in the European CX-60.
It's been nearly a decade since Mazda offered a six-cylinder engine in the US. The CX-9 was the last one back in 2015, using a 3.7-liter V6 sourced from Ford. Mazda says this new e-Skyactiv unit will be the company's most powerful mass-production gasoline engine ever.

In the CX-90, the inline-six engine will produce 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when running on premium fuel. This is far more than it produces in the CX-60 (280 hp and 332 lb-ft). It's unclear how Mazda was able to extract so much additional output from the engine, but this is great news for the US market.
For comparison, the CX-60 PHEV produces a combined 322 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque from its 2.5-liter four-cylinder and electric motor. The CX-90 PHEV is expected to use the same setup with a similar output. In other words, Mazda hasn't decided to follow other automakers by making the hybrid the performance option.

Along with the much-anticipated output reveal, Mazda confirmed the CX-90 will be the first US-bound model to use its new rear-biased all-wheel drive layout. Mazda says the rear-biased system will create a sportier, more performance-focused driving experience. The CX-90 will also come standard with Kinematic Posture Control, a brake-based torque vectoring system that debuted on the MX-5 Miata.
After weeks of teasers, we are excited to finally see the CX-90 in the metal.
