The Alto 800 was launched in the year 2000 as a replacement for the iconic Maruti 800.
According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the Alto 800. This also marks the end of the road for the brand’s iconic 796cc engine.
The report states that Maruti has halted the production of its highest-selling hatchback as upgrading the car to comply with the BS6 Phase 2 norms would not have been financially viable.
Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki, stated that the entry-level hatchback segment has shrunk over the years due to an increase in the cost of acquisition of these vehicles. This was due to increasing material costs and taxation. Another reason was the popularity of the Alto K10.
The Alto 800 was launched in the year 2000 as a replacement for the iconic Maruti 800. It was powered by a 796cc petrol engine producing 47 BHP and 69 Nm. The carmaker has sold 3.5 million units of the Alto 800 to date.
