New vehicle sales in Australia accelerate their fall in November to -15.3% year-on-year at 80,639 registrations, the weakest November result in 13 years: since 2008 as stock shortages triggered by the microchip crisis start to be really felt across the industry. The year-to-date tally however remains comfortably in positive at +18.3% and 971,429 units. When we exclude covid-gripped 2020, this is the lowest year-to-date volume since 2011. Private sales drop -8.4% year-on-year to 42,138 units, business fleets implode -28.8% to 27,493, rental sales edge up 7.4% to 4,840 and government sales dip -18.2% to 2,316.
All States and Territories are down year-on-year this month. NSW is off -9.4% to 27,940, Victoria is at -19.4% to 21,445, Queensland at -19.5% to 16,001, Western Australia at -19.8% to 7,081, South Australia at -10.6% to 5,052, Tasmania at -12.8% to 1,450, ACT at -3.1% to 1,406 and Northern Territory at -8.5% to 714. Looking at segments, SUV sales skid -20.6% to 39,733 and 49.3% share vs. 52.2% a year ago, light commercials dip -4.8% to 20,222 and 25.1% share vs. 22.3% in November 2020 and passenger cars decline by -18.7% to 16,832 while heavy commercials hold 4.8% of the market at 3,852 sales. As for the country origin of cars sold in Australia this month, Japan leads the way with 22,913 sales (-35.2%) ahead of Thailand at 17,970 (-11.5%), South Korea at 12,493 (-3.4%), China at 7,838 (+88.5%) and the U.S. at 3,796 (+40.8%).
In the brands ranking, Toyota (-34.3%) takes a direct hit due to stock shortages but remains by far the best-selling manufacturer in the country at 18.9% share vs. 21.4% so far this year. Hyundai (-0.7%) is very solid and repeats at #2 with 8.5% of the market vs. 6.9% YTD while Ford (-6%) also beats the market and rounds out the podium. Mitsubishi (+4.2%) defies the negative market and advances two spots on October to #4 whereas Mazda (-41.5%) implodes to #5 vs. #2 year-to-date. Below Kia (-8.6%), Chinese MG (+85.2%) posts by far the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 13 and climbs to a record 7th place with a record 4.6% share. MG ranks #9 year-to-date, just as Nissan (-12.3%), Volkswagen (-5.5%) and Subaru (-15.3%) round out the Top 10. Below, the Chinese continue to impress with GWM up 228.7% to a record 2.4% share also hit last July and LDV gains 30.4% to a record 2.2% share. MG, GWM and LDV add up to a record 9.2% of the Australian market in November. Genesis (+108.3%), Ram (+73.2%), Maserati (+72.7%), Fiat (+57.8%) and Peugeot (+23.7%) stand out further down.
Looking at the best-selling models for the month, the Ford Ranger (+4%) threepeats at #1, something it had never down before, but it’s still the Toyota Hilux (-16.1%) that holds the year-to-date top spot and will win 2021 given its 2,865 unit margin with only one month remaining. The Hyundai i30 (+10.1%) defies the negative context to step up to #3, toppling the Toyota Corolla (-24.2%). The Toyota RAV4 (-52.1%) is hit full frontal by stock shortages but is up one spot on October to #5, distancing the Nissan Navara (+78.1%). The Mitsubishi Outlander (+53.8%) soars 21 spots on October to break its ranking record at #7, while the Mitsubishi ASX (+10.9%) and MG ZS (+39.1%) both post solid gains just below. Note this is the third Australian Top 10 finish for the MG ZS. The Toyota Kluger (+209.3%) stops one spot short off a Top 10 ranking at #11, the MG3 (+116.1%) breaks its ranking record at #13 as does the Ford Everest (+46.2%) at #17.
