The Aviator arrives next summer as a 2020 model.
Lincoln’s latest crossover is ready for takeoff. The all-new Lincoln Aviator has just debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The three-row Aviator brings new luxury and new style to the brand.
The big body wears a big and bold nose, but it’s one that stays on the side of elegance over the garish gaping grates of a grille that are common in this class. From the side, it bears a strong resemblance to the Continental sedan, which is no bad thing.
The Aviator is going to arrive with a powertrain surprise. A 3.0L V6 wearing a pair of turbochargers. That engine will make in the ballpark of 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Big figures for a little engine. The surprise, though, is a new hybrid system. Lincoln says that the electrified Aviator Grand Touring will soar with 450 hp and a projected 600 lb-ft of torque. That, Lincoln says, will give it performance near the top of its class. “This is our most advanced hybrid technology,” said John Davis, chief program engineer.
The automaker is putting some touches in this vehicle that look to distinguish it as a genuine luxury ride. Like interior alert chimes that were commissioned to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. It also offers drivers the ability to use their phone as a key. Unlock, start, and drive, using the Lincoln Way app.
An available new adaptive suspension can read the road. That’s thanks to a camera mounted in the nose that scans the pavement surface constantly. It lets the suspension adjust to soften for potholes and other road imperfections.
All Aviators will come with Lincoln’s Co-Pilot 360 active safety features, but a new Co-Pilot360 Plus will add some helpful bits that will be a boon to any driver tired of the drudgery of the daily commute. Like traffic jam assist that combines stop and go radar cruise control with lane centring to help handle the workload in a tie-up. Or evasive steering assist that can swerve if the computer decides you can’t stop in time. And reverse braking assist and Active Park Assist Plus self-parking to help you get out of the mall with less stress.
Lincoln calls the new cabin a “soothing sanctuary.” The controls have been streamlined, with touches like putting the voice control button within thumb’s reach to try and simplify the experience.
Optional Perfect Position seats offer a whopping 30-way adjustability, plus massage and lumbar support. Middle-row seats can slide and recline for space and comfort. A new 12.3-inch configurable screen handles dashboard display duties.
If you want more from your symphony than just door chimes, the Aviator delivers. An available Revel Ultima audio system offers up to 28 speakers to make sure that the cabin is saturated with sound.
The Aviator arrives next summer as a 2020 model. The Grand Touring will touch down a few months later.
