The Jeep Wrangler has a new model year. It will only be available with a plug and four doors in the future. In the European Union, combustion engines are a thing of the past.
Actually, it was obvious last summer, but with the formal unveiling of the Wrangler model year 2022, it’s time to say farewell. Both the veteran, the small three-door Wrangler, and the final pure combustion engine, the two-liter turbo gasoline engine, are being phased out. The diesel has already been removed from the Jeep lineup for the European market.
Only the plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe will be accessible in the EU in the future, with other gasoline and diesel engines remaining available abroad. Because the Wrangler 4xe’s electrical engineering necessitates the necessary room, the small three-door variant is no longer available.
The three-door Jeep Wrangler is on the move.
This raises the cost of admission into the Wrangler world; the latest model in the series with a short gasoline engine was still available for at least 60,000 euros. The Sahara edition of the Wrangler 4xe costs 69,500 euros, the Rubicon costs 71,000 euros, and the unique 80th Anniversary model (not available in 2022) costs 72,500 euros. Because Jeep does not expand the electric range (53 km), German consumers will have to renounce money through the environmental bonus in the future. From 2022, a minimum range of 60 kilometers will be required for qualifying.
On the outside, the Jeep Wrangler 2022 hasn’t changed much. Two new normal colors (Silver Zynith Metallic Clear Coat and High Velocity Metallic Clear Coat) have been added, as well as two special colors (Tuscadero and Gobi) that are only available for a few weeks.
The split Sunrider fliptop is a brand-new addition to the lineup.
Another innovation is the durable gorilla glass (details in this post), which is standard on the Rubicon and available as an option on the Sahara. Jeep is now introducing the Sunrider Flip Top as a European alternative to its lineup. This is a hybrid of a soft top that folds over the front seats and a hard top that extends from the center of the car.
At least in Europe, the 2022 model year will mark the end of an era for Jeep. The small Jeep Wrangler, which was the initial model, is no longer available in Europe. At the same time, official sales of the gasoline model will be phased down. In the 1990s, a fun automobile that cost the same as a VW Golf had become a costly luxury.
