Update: ‘Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe Concept’ section added.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee was launched last year, and it includes a plug-in hybrid model (Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe), which appeals to the environment-conscious and off-road enthusiasts alike. Take a look at what we know so far about the most 4×4-capable Grand Cherokee to date:

Design
Compared to the Grand Cherokee L, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, including the 4xe, is sportier. Thanks to the shorter length, slimmer, D-Pillar, angular boat-like glasshouse, and unique rear-glass design, it has somewhat of a unique identity. The chrome window surround floats from the front of the D-pillar instead of the rear, highlighting the unique design of the rear glass. At the rear, a distinctive sleek black bar connects the tail lamps adding to the sporty styling.

There are no flashy exterior features that scream “green.” Jeep has kept the styling understated, just the way premium SUV customers prefer it. There’s a tiny blue “e” badge on the push-open/push-close cover securing the charging port on the left front fender and a 4xe logo on the left side of the tailgate.
Interior
The interior design of the 2022 Cherokee is the same as that of the Grand Cherokee L for the most part. The most noticeable difference is that it has a 10.25-inch front passenger screen integrated into the dashboard. The additional screen offers co-pilot assistance with navigation, camera viewing, and visual entertainment, making the journey for the front passenger nearly as engaging as the driver. Other changes inside the two-row model include updated switches, increased storage space in the front bin, and a new HD rear-seat entertainment system with FireTV built-in.

Specifications
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors, one in place of a conventional alternator and the other replacing the torque converter in the transmission. The transmission is the 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic unit. A 400-volt, 17 kWh traction battery pack residing under the floor, an Integrated Dual Charging Module (ICDM) that clubs a charger and a DC/DC converter, and a Power Inverter Module (PIM) are the main components of the 4xe plug-in hybrid system.
Driving Modes
The driver can select from three different drive modes, namely Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. The first two are self-explanatory, while in the eSave mode the vehicle drives using only gas, saving the electricity in the battery pack for later. This mode also offers the option of choosing between Battery Save and Battery Charge. Irrespective of the mode, the vehicle operates as a hybrid when the battery pack nears depletion. Here, the driver can select the level of regenerative braking.

Output & EV range
The plug-in hybrid powertrain of the 2022 Grand Cherokee produces 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Jeep expects a pure electric range of 25 miles and a fuel economy of 56 MPGe. EPA has given a slightly better certification of 26 miles of range, and an identical combined fuel economy rating of 56 MPGe. The total range, as per EPA, is higher than the company-estimated 440+ miles – 470 miles. According to EPA data, the Grand Cherokee 4xe costs USD 1.88 to drive 25 miles on electricity or USD 3.79 using gasoline.
Charging
The Grand Cherokee 4xe will ship with a Level I charging cable included. However, Level 1 charging will be a time-consuming process of 12 hours. One of the options available from Mopar is a Level II (240-volt) home charger, priced at USD 599. It can charge the plug-in hybrid SUV’s traction battery pack up to six times faster than a typical Level I charger, in as little as 2 hours.
Grades & Features

The standard grade will be feature-packed, including 18-inch wheels, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, Uconnect 5 navigation with 10.1-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch front passenger screen, 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat with memory, 4-way electrically adjustable lumbar support for the front seats, 506-watt, 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and more.

Capabilities (Off-roading & Towing)
The Quadra-Lift air suspension with electronic semi-active damping will be standard in the Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit grades. It provides up to 24 inches of water fording depth. The Quadra Trac II 4×4 system with a two-speed transfer case and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, a 47.4:1 crawl ratio, and 6,000-lbs max towing capacity are some of the highlights of the Grand Cherokee 4xe when it comes to mechanical features and capabilities.
Jim Morrison, Vice President, Jeep (North America), says that the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe is “the most off-road capable Grand Cherokee yet.” While testing it last summer, Jeep conquered the Rubicon trail driving it only in the Electric mode.
The PHEV features a new sway bar disconnect which allows the front and rear axles to articulate at crazy angles over rocks and boulders—reconnecting the sway bar improves on-road handling of the SUV as it functions like an anti-roll bar to reduce the lateral forces. The same setup is found on the hardcore Jeep Wrangler as well.

Mopar accessories
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe should get tens of accessories from Mopar, Stellantis’ in-house service, parts, and customer-care company. Many articles could be shared with the 2022 Grand Cherokee L (LWB), where customers have 75 choices for enhanced style, utility, comfort, and convenience. Unique alloy wheels, integrated side steps, cargo basket, bike, and watersport carriers, and tent kit are some of the official accessories we expect for the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe, which has not been announced yet.
Strong start for first Jeep 4xe model in America
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe, the brand’s first 4xe (four-bar-e) model in the U.S., is off to a strong start. Christian Meunier, CEO, Jeep, has told ABC News that the plug-in hybrid variant of the Wrangler accounts for nearly 25% of Jeep’s sales volume. Recording a total 204,610 sales, the Wrangler was the brand’s second-highest selling model in the U.S. last year.
