Nissan has dropped its biggest hint yet that a successor to the 370Z is on the horizon. The Japanese carmaker filed a trademark for a ‘Z’ logo with the Canadian Government earlier this week, suggesting that a new sports car is in the works.
As reported by Motor Trend, the Z logo is a little different to the one that adorns current 370Z line-up. That’s because there’s a small dash in the centre section, giving it a more retro look. In fact, it bears a striking resemblance to the badges of the Datsun-era sports cars.
Little else is known about Nissan’s next Z offering. The 370Z has been on sale since 2009, a production run that matches that of the Lotus Evora, and is long overdue a thorough overhaul.
Nissan has dropped a few hints in recent months that a new Z car is on the way, with the trademark filing being the most significant clue yet. Word on the street is that it’ll be called the 400Z, suggesting that the 345bhp, 3.7-litre V6 engine in the 370Z will get the boot for a new motor. We doubt that it’ll be a larger motor than the current car, given today’s stringent emission laws, but it could develop close to 400bhp.
It won’t be long until we find out, either. The replacement to the 370Z is due later this year, with sales expected to open in early 2021.
