IOC will set up a hydrogen plant at its Panipat oil refinery at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has announced that it plans to set up green hydrogen plants at all its refineries. It is part of IOC’s Rs 2 lakh crore green transition plan to achieve net-zero emissions from its operations by 2046.
IOC will set up a hydrogen plant at its Panipat oil refinery at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore by 2025. It will have the capacity to produce 7,000 tonnes per annum. The company plans to use electricity generated from renewable sources to split water to produce green hydrogen.
Hydrogen is said to be the fuel of the future. However, there are several hurdles that limit its widespread use. Hydrogen is used in refineries to lower the sulfur content of diesel fuel. IOC plans to use natural gas in refineries in place of liquid fuels while replacing grey hydrogen with green one produced using renewable power.
In the future, IOC fuel stations will be transformed into “energy outlets” offering EV charging points, battery swapping options, green hydrogen and biofuels along with conventional petrol and diesel.
