If the walls at Hyundai HQ are prone to leaks, there’s at least an element of ambiguity in the information that’s slipping out. Ambiguity no more, as an executive sets the record straight on the much-rumoured, then quashed, upcoming sports car.
After the South-Korean brand revealed a gorgeous concept called the N Vision 74 late last year, inspired by the brand’s 1974 Pony Coupe concept, there was talk of a production version.
Then, earlier this month, Korean outlet Money Today reported there would instead be a production car more closely inspired by the Pony Coupe itself – a car Hyundai said it was recreating with its original designer as a one-off, later denying the production model rumour.
This week, Hyundai’s Chief Creative Officer, Luc Donckerwolke – formerly of the Volkswagen Group where he designed models including Skodas, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis – told Top Gear that Hyundai is properly considering a production sports car based on the N Vision concept.
“I hate show business. I hate doing show cars and then… nothing,” he told the British outlet.
“We are serious about this. This could come into production. We have the platform – it’s a motorsport platform.”
When discussing the possibility of a production version, Donckerwolke said there was no reason the car couldn’t become a reality with its hydrogen drivetrain, or something similar, given the concept boasts 500kW, and that the push for a production version “came from management”.
The N Vision 74 coupe employs a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain.“It’s always good when the management is telling you [to do it]. There is nothing unfeasible about this car. It’s pure. We’re hoping and we’re working and it’s only a matter of the right constellation.”
While ‘production’ suggests plenty of units on offer, the senior designer told Top Gear it would likely be a “limited series” if it comes to fruition. It’s no 1974-faithful Pony Coupe, but it’s certainly the next best thing – if not better.
