Markus Flasch took over as BMW Motorrad’s head in 2023, and one of his first undertaking was teasing a new bike. Back then, he only posted a picture of him posing with the rear swingarm and saying something interesting is on the way (not paraphrasing him). That has since turned out to be the 2027 BMW R 20. The CEO just has revealed what appears to be a new R 20 boxer roadster in a personal Instagram post. Uploaded on Thursday, May 7 the image shows Flasch stood with six mystery modern-retro roadsters, along with the caption ‘now we are torquing’. “A new BMW R-series cruiser?” you ask. Well yes, and it shows that the company has not given up on it, despite the R 18 cruiser’s sale not being exactly stellar since its launch in 2020 (at least compared to its Transcontinental touring brethren). The same could be said about the R 1200 C, even after a Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond pulled stunts on it while handcuffed to Dato’ Michelle Yeoh. But hear us out. The 2027 BMW R 20 looks entirely different to the ultra-retro R 18 and instead boasts a more contemporary styling, much more akin to the new R nineT’s. Whereas the R 1200c and R 18 and R1200 C leaned into a heavily classical cruiser aesthetic, the R 20 looks far more aggressive like a power cruiser. Flasch even referenced the Yamaha MT-01, saying: “Yamaha at the time had the guts to put a fat cruiser engine into a sporty chassis.” Ah, so BMW wants to enter the power cruiser segment. BMW has remained tight-lipped about the R 20’s specifications at the moment, What we can see is a bobber-style seat and performance road tyres wrapped around 17-inch wheels, round LED headlamp circled by LED DRLs, and huge brake discs. We should know how the production-ready bike looks like and its specifications in EICMA this year.
