The Mortal Shell beta continues to entice gamers looking for a new, challenging experience. Because the game is so punishing when it comes to death, you’ll cherish every inch of progress you’re able to make. Naturally, you’ll want to make sure all of this progress is properly stored. To help you do this, we’ve put together a quick guide explaining how to save in Mortal Shell.
How to Save in Mortal Shell
When you start a new game in the Mortal Shell beta, you’ll see three available save slots. When playing on one of these save slots, the first thought you may have is whether you can manually save. Unfortunately, the Mortal Shell beta doesn’t offer a manual save option.
Instead, it tracks everything through an internal auto-save feature. Certain actions can trigger this auto-save if you’re someone who needs to know the game has been saved before you exit out of it.
First, you can press ESC and view the menu. On that menu, you can select “Exit To Main Menu” to return to the game’s home screen. By exiting to the main menu, you’ll tell the game you’re done for the day and trigger an auto-save.
In the event of a crash, you’ll find the game auto-saves at other points as well. For example, you’ll notice that death sends you back to the beginning of an area at the checkpoint. When you die and are sent back to that checkpoint, the game auto-saves.
If you close the game without exiting to the main menu, you’ll find yourself at that checkpoint when you jump back in later on. You can also auto-save by traveling between areas. For example, if you enter the Catacombs from Falgrim.

You’ll encounter a loading screen, and then when you’re able to move again, you can rest assured your progress has been auto-saved in that new area.
During our time in the beta, we found the game to be fairly generous in tracking all of our progress for us. Before you load into a previous save, you can view how much time you spent in the game, and where your character was when the game last saved. You can also view the number of Tar and Glimpses your character has on that save slot.
It’s nice because the game can be brutal at times, and the last thing you want is to have to start all over again fighting a boss you just beat because the game crashed or your computer accidentally shut off. To recap, there’s no traditional manual save option in the Mortal Shell beta. The game relies entirely on an internal auto-save feature that can be triggered by exiting to the main menu, entering a new area, dying and respawning at a checkpoint, and so on.
