The Chevrolet Corvette is a historically successful sports car but we’re not so sure that it’s just as good when you combine different eras. This blend of ’67 styling on top of a 2008 chassis and driveline is making us question what we believe. Let’s take a deeper dive into the mash-up and try to find a conclusion or two.
First of all, there’s no doubt that this car should drive quite well. The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette is a very good sports car and offers bulletproof reliability and excellent road manners. It’s those dynamics that are ultimately at the heart of Karl’s Kustoms too. The man who created the custom Corvette company did so because he loved the styling of classic C2 Corvettes but hated the way they drove.
These cars certainly feature a great deal of that classic styling. The fenders, front bumper, and hood all look just about as perfect as they could. From the right angles, you’d never know that this isn’t a real 1967 model.
Beyond that, it seems things aren’t as clear. The dimensions are just a hair off in other spots and it’s giving us uncanny valley vibes. That’s the oddly uncomfortable feeling many get when they see a humanoid android that’s so close to real that onlookers can get a little squeezy.
This car features a great paint job with a bright white streak down the hood and chrome trim. Under that hood is a 6.2-liter V8 with a giant Magnuson supercharger strapped to the intake. A partnership with Lingenfelter, the famous Corvette tuner, has led to many Karls Kustom Corvettes with 1,000-horsepower or more.
Still, there are a lot of unknowns here. We don’t know exactly what type of horsepower this particular car is making or what kind of supporting modifications have been made to put that power down. We don’t even know exactly what the dealership, Motor Car Group, is asking for the car. On the other hand, we do know that it has 17,566 miles on the odometer.
Of course, we know that if you roll up to cars and coffee or the local car show in this thing, you’ll turn a lot of heads. And we know that you’ll be doing it with modern power, modern handling, and modern comfort.
