General Motors is introducing another all-electric pickup truck. Like the previous combustion model, the Sierra EV runs under the GMC brand and is based on the Ultium platform. In the ‘Denali Edition 1’, the electric pickup with impressive data can already be reserved – but delivery will not take place until early 2024.
The Sierra EV is the second electric pickup from the GMC brand after the Hummer EV and the third from the company alongside the Chevrolet Silverado EV. Despite the same platform, the Sierra EV surpasses the electric Silverado in terms of technical data: the latter has an output of up to 495 kW in the “RST First Edition”. For the Sierra EV, GM states a preliminary output of 562 kW in the press release.
The battery, however, is the same: it is the maximum configuration of the Ultium platform, which has an energy content of 200 kWh with 24 modules. Therefore, the range specification – like the power still a provisional value – in the “Denali Edition 1” is 400 miles or the equivalent of 640 kilometres, as in the Silverado EV. The battery can be charged via AC with 19.2 kW and via DC with up to 350 kW thanks to an 800-volt system. With the ‘Onboard Power Station Pro’, power can also be drawn from the battery with up to 10.2 kW capacity.
But: All data mentioned refer only to the GMC Sierra EV ‘Denali Edition 1’. Details on further versions of the Sierra EV, which are to start at prices starting at 50,000 US dollars net, will be announced at a later date. The performance of the Chevrolet Silverado EV already differs depending on the selected equipment level.
According to GM, deliveries of the special model are expected to start in early 2024 at prices starting at 107,000 US dollars net. There are no technical data on the simpler versions, but there is a date: GMC plans to introduce the AT4 and Elevation versions for the 2025 model year – the “Denali Edition 1” officially runs as a 2024 model year.
“This is the Denali of EVs — and a truck that is every bit a GMC,” says Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “That means it leaves nothing on the table when it comes to hauling, towing and overall power while unlocking even more possibilities around what a GMC pickup can offer.” Towing capacity, by the way, is 9,500 pounds or 4.3 tons.
