Electric car brand Polestar has delivered around 21,200 vehicles in the first six months of 2022, nearly 125 per cent more than the 9,510 vehicles delivered in the same period last year. Polestar reiterated its reduced target of delivering 50,000 electric cars in the full year.
In May, Polestar had already lowered its target for the current year from 65,000 units to 50,000 vehicles. The reason given at the time was the ongoing Covid lockdown in China. The resulting restrictions in the supply chain would lead to the inability to build more cars – although demand is probably at a level that would have made the target of 65,000 vehicles possible.
In its latest announcement, Polestar states that its global order intake has risen to more than 50,000 vehicles since the beginning of 2022 – an increase of more than 350 per cent year-on-year. However, due to the aforementioned problems in the supply chain, Polestar’s delivery times have also increased recently – previously, the brand was only slightly affected by the semiconductor shortage and was ready to deliver within a few months.
Now a second shift is to be introduced at the vehicle plant in China shortly, which should help make up for some of the production lost at the beginning of the year and pave the way for future growth, according to the company.
During the first half of the year, Polestar expanded into six more countries and is now active in 25 markets. In addition, the retail network has been expanded from 103 to 125 locations. The model range will also be expanded soon: In October, the production version of the Polestar 3 is to be presented “presumably” the electric SUV will be available for order from the day of its premiere.
“It is great to see that the number of enthusiastic Polestar 2 customers is growing so quickly,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “I am very confident that the strong momentum we have seen this year in brand awareness and sales figures will accelerate powerfully in the coming years as more ground-breaking cars are revealed.”
