- Tax-free price for Nissan Leaf is RM 168.8k, valid until 31-December 2023
- Social media posts claiming RM 145k selling price is not true
- Currently only available for subscription, via GoCar Subs
Sole authorized Nissan distributor in Malaysia Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) has confirmed that the tax-free price for is RM 168.8k (detailed pricing to be updated on their website soon), down from its earlier price of RM 181,263.
The circa RM 12k reduction is made after Malaysia’s Budget 2022 announcement to waive all battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from import and excise duty. For imported (CBU) BEVs like the Nissan Leaf, the tax exemption period is only valid until 31-December 2023,
Sales tax and road tax will still apply.
The confirmed tax-free price is quite close to WapCar.my’s (circa RM 160k) made in November 2021. Note the Nissan Leaf’s previous RM 181k price is already without import duty, with the benefit of reduced excise tax.
Under the Japan-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement, the Nissan Leaf is already exempted from paying the 30 percent import duty. As for excise tax, this has already been reduced to 10 percent even before Budget 2022. Excise tax for regular cars start range from 75 to 105 percent.
ETCM would also like to clarify that social media posts claiming that tax-free Nissan Leaf are now available at GoCar Subs for RM 145k is not true, and that price is for pre-owned cars, not new cars.
Only ETCM, as the authorized distributor of Nissan vehicles, is selling new Nissan Leaf.
However at the moment, the Nissan Leaf is no longer available on sale, at least not via a traditional ownership model. Instead, the Leaf sold as a subscription-only product, via ETCM’s sister-company GoCar Subscription’s GoEV service.
How it works is that users will sign a lease for one instead of taking a hire purchase for one or buying it outright. The subscription model actually makes a lot more sense.
EVs have poor resale value and battery replacement cost is a concern for would-be buyers. A subscription-type sales model is an easy solution as it removes all these concerns from the buyer.
Users will simply sign up for a 3-year lease, at RM 2,300 per month (details here). All maintenance cost (including tyres) will be taken care by GoEV. The monthly fee is inclusive of road tax and a 7 kW wallbox charger (quite good value, because 7 kW wall boxes are not cheap).
It also means that the with a starting price of RM 149k, is still the cheapest EV currently on sale in Malaysia.
