The prototype in question was an older mule being used by a supplier to test heat conditions, GM says.
Cochespias / InstagramA C8 Corvette prototype was caught on camera burning to the ground in Spain last Thursday. Witnesses on the ground suggested the car was a mule for the E-Ray, a rumored hybrid trim that could sit above the Z06, but according to Chevy, that’s not the case.
A Chevrolet spokesperson said in a call with Road & Track the C8 test mule seen burning in the original video was not any sort of electrified prototype. Rather, the automaker claims it was an older test mule being used by a supplier that, at the time, was testing heat conditions.
The company spokesperson clarified this mule was operating separately from the two camouflaged C8s testing on the Nürburgring earlier in July, which are still believed to be E-Ray hybrid prototypes.
Chevrolet told R&T in an earlier statement given on Monday that the car was a “specialized testing mule with a setup that’s not indicative of what an actual customer would receive, so it is different than what many people are speculating the car might be.”
Chevrolet did not disclose what the supplier was testing at the time of the incident, or what sort of powertrain the car was using.
