Bugatti has made a limited edition run of Type 35 replica toy cars, and one can be yours for a mere £27,000. Sorry, “starting from” £27,000 that is. The Bugatti ‘Baby II’ Type 35 is a 75% scale replica of the iconic Type 35 race car, powered by a battery and a small electric motor producing…wait for it…
…1.3bhp. Sensational. It gets better, because this actually has two driving modes: standard and ‘expert'. Select the latter and the power limiter is lifted, bestowing a whopping 5.4bhp beneath your right foot, good for a 30mph top speed. A speed that will, we’re sure you’ll agree, be absolutely terrifying in this thing. Standard top speed is a more reasonable 12mph. The battery range is around 15 miles from a 1.4kWh pack.
But it gets better/more terrifying. Spec a mid-range (and very Partridge-sounding) Vitesse model and the maximum output hits 13.5bhp, good for a 42mph top speed. That one comes with a larger 2.8kWh battery pack too, doubling the range pretty much.
So yeah, the price. You can pay roughly £30k for one of these at the base, rising to £48,000 for the Vitesse models. But if you spec a ‘Pur Sang’ version that goes up to £64,000. Basically, if you buy one of these for your child you’ve set a bar that will ultimately ruin their life.
Why so expensive? As in, why as much as an ACTUAL Porsche Cayman? Well, the work that goes into one of these is deeply impressive. All models are a virtually exact replica of the Type 35 down to the chassis itself, the wheels, and the dashboard components, even the hollowed out front axle of the race car. Base model, erm, models have a composite body and…get this…a mechanical limited slip differential. Most production cars don’t have one of those.
The main difference between the base and the two higher models (Vitesse and Pur Sang) is that they have carbon fibre bodywork, in the latter case hand-beaten as per the original Type 35 hence the higher price. Both come with a speed key too – a feature in modern Bugattis – that when turned lifts the top speed to the maximum 42mph.
Buyers get to choose from 21 body colours and eight upholstery types, each of them leather of course, while the oversized steering wheel is hewn from wood as per the original.
So…want one? Get in while you still can because Bugattis is making only 500 of these and there are only a handful left.
