If you own a Bugatti Chiron, one of the fastest and most costly automobiles in the world, you’re likely someone who likes to make a statement. A jewel-encrusted timepiece is often the perfect companion for a flash car, but in the case of the Bugatti, it requires a work of oneupmanship in the same league. Meet the Jacob & Co Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon watch.
Many of us revel in the mechanical intricacy of a fine watch, but Jacob & Co’s partnership with Bugatti has yielded what could be the ultimate watch. Strapped to your wrist, at a cost of $280,000 (£223,000), is a miniature W16 engine. Push the crown and the pistons come to life, with 578 pieces dancing to mimic the motion of this power unit. The block is made from sapphire crystal, and its turbochargers also spool as this 20-second display plays out. Apparently, it took Jacob & Co three full days to program its machinery to creates some of the aluminium parts – that’s how intricate it is.
The engine mechanism serves no timekeeping purpose, but it is quite the peacock feather. It is suspended by four coilover dampers to help it withstand shocks and buffeting. Other nice touches include dials inspired by the Chiron itself, French blue details, and echoes of the supercar’s grille. Watch customers can customise the timepiece in several different ways, including coloured coilovers to match the Bugatti they might own.
Just 250 Jacob & Co Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon will be produced, meaning that only half of the eventual 500 Chiron owners will get the chance to own one. Something that makes this timepiece even rarer than the car on which it is based.
£223,000 is a fair chunk of change, but we’d happily give one a home.
