The Nissan Skyline is set to become an electric car, specifically a crossover SUV, according to insider information regarding development of a new model for 2025.
As published by Japanese motoring outlet Best Car, Nissan is readying a high-performance SUV with a souped-up version of the B9 e-4orce drivetrain from the Nissan Arya with more than 300kW.
Set to take design inspiration from the Infiniti QX55, a car not sold in Australia, the next Skyline will supersede the sedan version in about 2025.
It’ll be the third ‘era’ of the badge, after having been a performance car until the R34 Skyline, then a passenger car during the Infiniti-shared model era.
While sedans are disappearing from showrooms and sales charts, Nissan’s executives have been adamant that the Skyline badge will live on, so an electric crossover SUV seems a reasonable way to make it appeal to buyers.
While Best Car speculated that the car could appear as a hybrid using the brand’s e-Power series hybrid system, it would lack the performance to justify moving the badge to an SUV.
It’s expected to have a powerful motor at each axle, making it an AWD EV SUV with as much as 335kW.
Importantly, as it’s not set to be badged an Infiniti, which means if it all comes to fruition, an Australian launch isn’t off the cards. Stay tuned.
