America's bestselling plug-in hybrid has a fresh face and a new interior for 2024.
For the second year in a row, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in the USA, but Jeep has now elected to facelift the off-roader for 2024. There's enough proof that the plug-in hybrid Wrangler is no less capable than the gas version, and with the improvements made to crucial gripes we've had about it for the new model year, it's likely to continue being the brand's most sought-after vehicle. An updated interior sees the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe looking and feeling more premium, while the infotainment setup gets a significant boost too. There's no change in horsepower figures, but the 4xe was never chasing 0-60 times anyway; instead, it serves to spearhead Stellantis' strategy to cut its global carbon footprint by 50% before 2030 while still offering superior off-roading machines to the adventurous buyer.

2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Price And Competition
While much information about the latest Wrangler PHEV has been shared, we don't know what it will cost yet. Given it's been updated substantially, we can expect higher starting prices, but the automaker has also specified that the new Sport S 4xe trim will come with a lower entry price point. Looking at the 2023 lineup, the Willys 4xe was the cheapest model with an MSRP of $54,735; it comes at around $12k more than the corresponding combustion model. With that as a guide, the Sport S 4xe could cost around $50k. The High Altitude trim was the most expensive in 2023, so we expect the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe's top trim to be over $65k.
There aren't many plug-in hybrid off-roaders that could be considered rivals, although numerous excellent off-road-focused EVs exist. Buyers could, however, cross-shop with the Range Rover Sport Hybrid if they wanted to spend twice as much as the Jeep 4xe is likely to cost. The Ford Explorer Hybrid's price is closer, but it's both bigger and less capable off-road than the Wrangler 4xe. There is no hybrid Ford Bronco at present.

Like the rest of the 2024 Wrangler lineup, 4xe models get a refreshed face that is dominated by an updated version of the familiar seven-slot grille. The new grille is slimmer than before but still flanked by the signature round headlights that give it a particularly wide-eyed look. The grille is blacked out as standard, but Willys and High Altitude models feature gloss black slots, while platinum silver features on Sahara trims.
New for 2024 is an integrated 'stealth antenna' that forms part of the windshield to avoid getting hooked on branches, as well as ten new wheel designs for both the standard fare and what's on the options list. Wheel sizes are trim-dependent and range from 17-inch items to 20 inchers. The Xtreme 35 Package can be optioned to certain trims and will add 35-inch BF Goodrich all-terrain rubber instead of the standard 33-inch tires.
Although the Jeep Wrangler 4xe can only be had in four-door configuration, there are a variety of ways to specify the roof, including the expected soft-top options, hardtops in either black or body color, and the Sunrider for Hardtop option. Naturally heavier than gas-only rivals, the Wrangler 4xe's curb weight ranges from 5,049 pounds to 5,265 lbs in its heaviest configuration. Other key metrics include approach and departure angles, with the former ranging from 42/2 – 43.8 degrees depending on the trim and the latter between 35.2 and 35.6 degrees. The ramp angle is 22 degrees (22.5 on Willys and Rubicon models). Water fording is accommodated up to 31.5 inches.

There may be numerous options in the gas range, but the 4xe gets one plug-in hybrid powertrain – it's the brand's award-winning setup. The engine in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder paired with two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack. Specs from the plug-in hybrid setup are 375 horsepower combined and 470 lb-ft of torque. The latter figure is the same as what the gas-fed 6.4-liter V8 in the Wrangler Rubicon 392 puts out. An eight-speed automatic gearbox sends power to all four wheels via a full-time 4WD setup.
There isn't anything new about the 2024 Wrangler 4xe's powertrain setup, and the familiar E Select modes are still in place to suit your driving style. From the default Hybrid mode to Electric and eSave, you can choose how and when to use the electric power. What is new, however, is that each 4xe now comes with the Jeep Power Box feature with four 120-volt outlets that can send power to external devices.
Off-roading is the Wrangler's specialty, even in 4xe guise, so all models come with Dana solid front and rear axles, a two-speed transfer case, traction control, four-wheel disc brakes, and all-terrain tires of at least 32 inches. New Willys 4xe models get a Selec-Trac full-time transfer case with a 4LO ratio of 2.72:1, while Rubicon models come with an electronic front sway-bar disconnect and front and rear-axle lockers, and a First Dana 44 HD full-float solid rear axle. These trims can also tow up to 3,500 lbs and have a winch load capacity of up to 8,000 lbs when appropriately kitted.
Gas Mileage, Charging, And Range
By far the most efficient Wrangler on the market, the 4xe gets gas mileage figures of 20 mpg combined without hybrid assistance, and 49 MPGe with plug-in help. It also has a useful 21-mile all-electric range.
To fully charge the battery on a Level 1 charger will require 12 hours, with that time dropping to two hours on a Level 2 Jeep Branded charger.
Jeep Wrangler Interior And Cargo
One of the best aspects of the recent facelift is evident from inside the cabin. Along with the rest of the lineup, the interior of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is now spiffier than ever before with a decidedly premium vibe. The dashboard layout has been tweaked and will be wrapped in either polyurethane or fabric, depending on the trim level. It's got a soft-touch feel to it and gets contrast stitching. Nestled in the dashboard are slimmer central air vents and an all-new instrument panel.
The touchscreen display is bigger for 2024 at 12.3 inches. Uconnect 5 does duty and is faster and smoother than ever, according to the manufacturer. Over-the-air updates will ensure it's always at the cutting edge, and it comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The display can be customized to display up to five saved user profiles, each with its own preferences for apps and settings. And with better hands-free voice recognition and the ability to simultaneously connect two Bluetooth devices to the system, it feels like the most advanced Wrangler infotainment setup we've seen.
Standard upholstery for the seats in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe comprises premium cloth, with leather as standard on the High Altitude. Upgrades can be made via package selection on the lower trims, with options like heated front seats, which are only standard on Sahara and High Altitude. You'll have to manually adjust seats in the base models because only the High Altitude gets 12-way power adjustment as standard, which can be optionally specced on the Sahara and Rubicon models. An exclusive new interior theme called Mantis Green is available for the High Altitude.
The Wrangler 4xe's updates are not just aesthetic, and the major news should actually be the improvements to safety. This includes first and second-row airbags as standard for all models, with forward-collision warning and advanced cruise control included for all trims, too. This bolsters a safety suite that already includes blind-spot monitoring and rear park assist.
Another feature worth noting is the new 'Trails Offroad' guide, which will provide detailed information and advice on where to find and how to navigate 62 Jeep Badge of Honor trails across the states, and although it'll be made available a little later in the year, will add loads of value to those who regularly take their Wrangler off the beaten path. A subscription will unlock even more trails. There's no change in cargo space for the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and you still get 27.7 cubic feet of trunk volume behind the back row. Fold it down and you'll have 67.4 cubes available.
