Titan vs. Frontier: Size Matters
2022 Nissan Titan
Easy to live with, except when parking in tight spots, the Nissan Titan is a viable solution to those looking for a civil pickup that also happens to have a great warranty. Its 5.6-liter V8 offers plenty of grunt, 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, to be exact. The 9-speed automatic transmission is a smooth operator.
The lineup starts with the Titan King Cab with rear-wheel drive. Crew Cab models cost around $3,000 more and 4-wheel drive (4WD) adds $3,000 on top of that. Speaking of that 4WD system, it can be ordered with optional auto-locking front hubs. The top-shelf Platinum Crew Cab 4×4 begins at around $60,000. Destination adds $1,595 to that.
The Titan was updated in a major way for 2020, and we expect no major changes for this large half-ton pickup truck in 2022. The interior stays competitive with the Ford F-150 and the Toyota Tundra but falls behind when compared to the attractive interior found on the RAM 1500. Still, the optional 9-inch infotainment touchscreen is a welcomed add-on. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard here, as is a modern safety suite with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning.
Trim levels include Titan S, SL Platinum Reserve and the off-road-oriented Pro-4x model. An electronic locking rear differential is standard on the Titan Pro-4X, which also gets skidplates and Bilstein shock absorbers tuned for the dirt.
2022 Nissan Frontier
The new 2022 Nissan Frontier is virtually all-new, with a few exceptions: The 3.8-liter V6 engine, 9-speed automatic transmission, and the boxed ladder frame carry over from the 2021 model. The engine, which mates to a 9-speed automatic, produces best-in-class 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Max towing capabilities top out a 6,720 pounds for a Frontier King Cab 4×2.
The 2022 Frontier is available in S, SV, PRO-4X, and PRO-X trim levels. The King Cab offers extra space while the Crew Cab body offers extra comfort. Improved hydraulic mounts on the cab provide better road isolation. Buyers will be able to choose between 2WD and 4WD powertrains. Bed choices will depend on how big a cab you need. A wide variety of packages are available to customize the Frontier to your needs.
Nissan’s Zero-gravity seats offer plenty of comfort. Also available is a 9-inch diagonal touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an optional Fender Premium 9-speaker Audio System, and available Qi wireless charging are also in the mix.
The base Nissan Frontier 4×2 King Cab starts at $27,840 with a $1,150 destination fee. Designed for five passengers, the Frontier Crew Cab is powered by the standard 3.8-liter V6 and 9-speed automatic transmission with a 2WD powertrain. A 7-inch color touchscreen display audio system is standard and includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Trailer Sway Control is now standard on all models.
