Which is why a quick announcement from Mazda this week is so remarkable. They haven’t just dropped the price of their CX-9 midsize SUV. They’ve made all-wheel-drive (AWD) – usually, an added-cost option – standard while dropping the price.
Cheaper Front-Wheel-Drive Option Gone
The 2022 CX-9 starts at $35,280. A comparably equipped 2021 model starts at $36,060. Both require a $1,225 destination fee.
Here we should note that buying a 2021 model for just $34,160 before the destination fee is possible. But that vehicle would be front-wheel-drive – something Mazda will cease offering in 2022.
The CX-9 currently slots in 13th out of 14 in our list of the best 3-row midsize SUVs. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a look. The quality of most cars has increased to the point that even lower-ranked options are often enjoyable and reliable. The CX-9 has always been known for spirited handling despite its size, and for boasting premium-feeling cabin materials. In 2022, it will also make a good argument for itself with its new, lower price tag and standard AWD.
Mazda’s i-Activ AWD system is tuned to improve dry-weather handling as much as to add foul-weather sure-footedness. Standard G-Vectoring Control Plus adjusts engine torque in response to steering, giving the CX-9 a light-footed feel despite its bulk.
Mazda seems to have made few other changes to the 2022 CX-9. There is one new trim level on offer. Called Touring Plus, it slides into the middle of the price range. The Touring Plus model features black 20-inch alloy wheels, a glossy black grille, ventilated front seats, and a driver’s seat memory function.
CX-9 May be Short-Lived
Mazda is in the process of revamping its entire SUV lineup. The plan involves bringing standard AWD to every crossover in the lineup and supplementing or replacing some models with more rugged, off-road-oriented vehicles. Mazda has said the CX-9 would eventually be replaced by a CX-90, which may be to the CX-9 what the new, outdoorsy CX-50 is to the existing CX-5. But the company hasn’t given a date for the switch.

Mazda also requires a $1,225 destination fee in 49 states or a $1,270 fee in Alaska.
