Thanks to inflation and supply chain issues, virtually everything is more expensive than it used to be.
However, the facelifted Mazda CX-5 is bucking that trend as the crossover starts at $25,900. While that’s $530 more than last year’s crossover, the CX-5 now comes standard with all-wheel drive and that means the 2022 model offers a savings of $870 when compared to its all-wheel drive predecessor.
Besides the improved pricing, the 2022 CX-5 adopts the “latest generation Kodo design ethos.” Among the changes are a new front bumper and a revised grille with a three-dimensional texture. They’re joined by a modified rear bumper, updated lighting units, a revised tailgate, and larger tailpipes.
The updates don’t stop there as the crossover adopts redesigned seats that promise to offer a more “natural and comfortable experience.” There’s also a more responsive six-speed automatic transmission, an upgraded structure with improved rigidity, and a revised suspension.
Furthermore, the trim structure has been revamped as the familiar Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Grand Touring Reserve names have been retired. The entry-level model is now called the CX-5 2.5 S and it features LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and 17-inch alloy wheels. The model also boasts a 10.25-inch infotainment system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a four-speaker audio system, and black cloth seats.
One step up is the $27,900 CX-5 2.5 S Select, which adds leatherette seats, rear privacy glass, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. Buyers will also find a passive entry system, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, and an upgraded six-speaker audio system.
The $29,160 CX-5 2.5 S Preferred ups the ante by adding a moonroof and power liftgate. Buyers will also find a power passenger seat, leather upholstery, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink.
Last year’s Carbon Edition returns for $30,280 and it features a Polymetal Gray exterior with gloss black mirrors and black 19-inch alloy wheels. The model also has gloss black interior trim, which contrasts with red stitching.
Upgrading to the $32,310 CX-5 2.5 S Premium rewards buyers with a lightly revised exterior that features LED daytime running lights and 19-inch wheels with a silver finish. They’re joined by a ten-speaker Bose audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio, paddle shifters, and a 7-inch display in the instrument cluster. This variant is also notable for having a Mazda Intelligent Drive Select system with Normal, Off-Road, and Sport modes.
Since variety is the spice of life, there are even more trims and the $33,950 CX-5 2.5 S Premium Plus comes equipped with a color head-up display, a heated steering wheel, and heated/ventilated front seats. The model also has power-folding side mirrors, a windshield wiper de-icer, and heated rear seats.
All of the aforementioned models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which develops 187 hp (139 kW / 190 PS) and 186 lb-ft (252 Nm) of torque. However, if you want more performance, you can upgrade to the $36,400 CX-5 2.5 Turbo. It boasts a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that now develops up to 256 hp (191 kW / 260 PS) and 320 lb-ft (434 Nm) of torque.
The performance-oriented model also has gloss black exterior accents and 19-inch alloy wheels with a black metallic finish. Other highlights include a wireless smartphone charger and black or parchment leather seats with red accents.
Lastly, there’s the range-topping CX-5 2.5 Turbo Signature. It starts at $38,650 and features body color cladding and a luxurious interior with Caturra Brown Nappa leather as well as genuine wood trim. The model also comes equipped with GPS navigation and an assortment of safety features such as front/rear parking sensors, a surround view camera, and traffic jam assist.
That’s a lot to take in, but the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will arrive at U.S. dealerships this winter.
