One of our favourite hot hatchbacks, the 2022 Ford Fiesta ST, has been updated for the 2022 model year. Featuring a new front end, new safety kit and more luxurious features, the updated Fiesta ST is due in Australia in the second quarter of next year. Due to battle with the Hyundai i20 N, which is due very soon, the Fiesta ST will be priced likely slightly higher than the current car’s $32,290 plus on-road costs figure.
“Fiesta ST is a small car with real personality. It’s the car for people who love to drive, and who enjoy a hot hatch with expressive styling,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford of Australia.
“Our latest Fiesta ST takes this to another level, and adds even more of the technology that we know our Australian customers love.”
Centre of the updates to the 2022 Ford Fiesta ST is a new front end with a larger grille, more modern headlights with Matrix LED technology and new grey finishing. The frontal Ford badge now lies prominently in the centre of the grille, in line with Ford’s global styling, and two new exterior colours will be available: ‘Boundless Blue’ and the ‘Mean Green’ seen here. The 18-inch alloy wheels have been redesigned to compliment the more aggressive look.
The rear end of the 2022 Ford Fiesta ST has been revised slightly with darker taillights, but that’s the extent of the changes. The interior is similarly the same as before – save for a new 12.3-inch digital driver’s display – though there are new sports seats with 14-way electric adjustment for the driver.
Under the bonnet of the 2022 Ford Fiesta ST is the same excellent 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine as the pre-updated model, producing the same 147kW of power though its peak torque has been increased by 30Nm to 320Nm. The peak torque now lasts longer too, between 1,600rpm and 4,000rpm. The standard six-speed manual remains the same with no automatic option – thankfully! – in sight.
The 2022 Ford Fiesta ST has earned more technology with Ford focusing chiefly on the car’s new Matrix LED headlights, which offer ‘glare-free’ high beam technology. The lights also feature cornering ability, and they activate with the wipers – as all cars should.
Other standard tech includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic rear braking. Rear occupant alert has been added to the spec sheet, while wireless phone charging and upgraded 575-watt B&O Play sound system have also been added.
Left behind in Europe are the 2022 Ford Fiesta ST’s siblings: the Fiesta ST-Line and Fiesta Active. Much like the current Focus ST-Line and Active, the former features the ST’s styling with warmer performance (powerplants with up to 110kW is available), while the latter features a slightly raised right height, body cladding and roof rails to appear more rugged and unique interior upholstery for those wanting to be more adventurous. Unfortunately, they’re not destined for Australia but we’d love to see them.
