The Ford Bronco SUV is receiving the Raptor treatment for the 2022 model year, equipped as the most powerful street-legal Bronco to date.
The 2022 Bronco Raptor is built upon the 4-door variant of the offroad SUV, utilizing a unique combination of powertrain, suspension, and exterior components. The vehicle also incorporates specific tuning and computer upgrades, providing drivers with greater power and flexibility.
The Bronco Raptor is powered by an exclusive twin-turbo 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine tuned to Raptor-level specifications. While exact power figures are yet to be disclosed, Ford stated the new power plant will be capable of more than 400 horsepower.
The engine is paired to Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission and sends exhaust out from a true dual-exhaust setup with active-valve exhaust, a Bronco-first. The exhaust system features four selectable exhaust notes: Normal, Sport, Quiet, and Baja. With regards to driver selectability, the Bronco Raptor sees the return of the Bronco’s GOAT Modes (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain).
This Terrain Management System provides drivers with selectable drive modes catered to the environment they’re driving in, with adverse off-road conditions specifically in mind. The system features seven distinctive drive modes, including a uniquely-tuned Baja mode; it activates a turbo anti-lag system to maximize high-speed off-road performance. Another Bronco-first is Tow/Haul mode, which helps enable the Raptor’s 4,500 pound tow rating (1,000 pounds greater than the base Bronco).
Off the road and on the trail, the Bronco Raptor is outfitted with a special High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension (HOSS) system, collaboratively designed by Ford Performance and FOX. The Raptor Bronco’s HOSS 4.0 features FOX 3.1 Internal Bypass Semi-Active Dampers, with integrated reservoirs up front and remote reservoirs in back. Suspension height sensors at each corner of the vehicle monitor terrain conditions and adjust suspension tuning accordinging; the vehicle is also aided by Trail Control, Trail Turn Assist and Trail On-Pedal Driving functionality.
All of these components are fitted to the Bronco Raptor’s fully boxed steel frame, complete with new shock towers, heavy-duty bash and skid plates, and B-pillar crossbar and C-pillar reinforcement. The vehicle rides atop special 37-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber; those wheels are bolted up to Ford Performance axles also used in the Bronco DR race truck.
Externally, the Bronco Raptor sets itself apart with massive “FORD” lettering across the grille, akin to what’s found on the F-150 Raptor, bookended by trim-specific LED headlights and amber daytime running lamps. The heavy-duty modular front bumper provides tow hooks, removable end caps, removable Rigid LED fog lamps and Rigid off-road lamps. The front hood features an integrated hood vent; the fender vents are painted to match the body color.
Other exterior features include wider fender flares, Raptor-specific graphics and exclusive rock rails. All-in-all, the new Bronco’s stance is roughly 9.8 wider than the base model’s.
Inside the Bronco Raptor, “Black Onyx” marine-grade vinyl seats feature Ford Performance “Code Orange” stitching and accents– even the start button lights up in orange. The steering wheel is shifter than normal, flanked by special magnesium paddle shifters. Behind that, an all-digital 12-inch cluster displays critical vehicle information.
The Bronco Raptor can be equipped with the Lux package to further enhance the vehicle; many of the accoutrements are located within the cabin. The standard High Package includes a 12-inch touchscreen with SYNC 4 connectivity, as well as an exterior 360-degree camera. The Lux Package throws in a 10-speaker B&O audio system and Adaptive Cruise Control.
The 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor will open up to orders in March of this year; though Ford stated that a majority of these orders will go to existing reservation holders. Vehicles are slated to arrive this summer.
