Volkswagen-owned Spanish performance brand Cupra has detailed the third model in its launch range this July, the 2022 Cupra Formentor mid-size sports SUV.
While it might share its platform with the Australia-bound Cupra Ateca medium SUV, the Formentor is Cupra’s first standalone model – without an equivalent from Seat, another Spanish Volkswagen Group brand – and is pitched as a sportier, more dynamic offering than the Ateca.
Four variants will be available in Australia – V, VZ, VZe and VZx – spanning from an entry-level 140kW petrol model with all-wheel drive, to a flagship 228kW/400Nm all-wheel-drive rival for Volkswagen’s Tiguan R, and an efficient 180kW/400Nm front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid.
Prices aren’t slated to be announced for a few more weeks, however details released last year suggest the VZe plug-in hybrid will be the most expensive variant, priced from $60,000 to $65,000 before on-road costs. Entry-level variants are expected to cost more than $40,000 or $45,000.
Cupra models in Australia will be sold online, aided by a network of approximately 12 showrooms. While fixed, non-negotiable pricing will be offered nationwide, the exact price buyers pay will differ slightly across the country, given differences in stamp duty costs between states.
Powering the base Formentor V 4Drive is a 140kW/320Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, powering all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4Drive all-wheel-drive system for a 7.1-second 0-100km/h time.
The mid-tier Formentor VZ loses 4Drive all-wheel drive, but increases outputs to 180kW and 370Nm, for a 0-100km/h time of 6.8 seconds. A flagship Formentor VZx 4Drive pairs all-wheel drive with an uprated 228kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo engine and seven-speed auto for a 4.9-second 0-100km/h time.
Meanwhile, the Formentor VZe pairs a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor, 13kWh battery and six-speed dual-clutch auto for outputs of 180kW and 400Nm, a 7.0-second 0-100km/h time, and approximately 50km of all-electric range.

Standard features from the Formentor V up include LED headlights and tail-lights, a 12-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital instrument display, tri-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and a full suite of active safety features.
The Leather and Power package available range-wide adds with leather upholstery (replacing cloth), heated front seats, an electric memory driver’s seat, power tailgate, Beats sound system and memory mirrors – with a panoramic glass sunroof also available across the range.
The contents of the Leather and Power package are standard on the range-topping VZx, plus unique Petrol Blue trim, a Supersport steering wheel, black side skirts, and more. The VZx can be optioned with Brembo front brakes, with 370mm front discs replacing the standard-fit 340mm items.
