Cupra Born electric hatch will soon be cheaper than its plug-in hybrid and performance cousins in the Spanish brand’s range
The Cupra Born electric hatch will soon cost less than its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and performance counterparts in the Spanish brand’s upcoming 2024 model year line-up, following MY24 price increases for the Cupra Leon, Formentor and Ateca.
The move comes a bit over six months after $1500 and $500 was shaved off the asking prices of the flagship Cupra Leon VZx and VZe respectively, bringing price parity for all three powertrains.
But at an unchanged $59,990 plus on-road costs, the Born EV is now cheaper than MY24 versions of its hot VZx and PHEV VZe sister models in the Cupra range (so all but the entry-level Leon and Formentor V and VZ), at least until the upgraded MY24 Born is released.
Available to order “shortly” ahead of first deliveries by September, the 2024 Cupra Leon, Formentor and Ateca will increase in price by between $1200-$2000 depending on the variant, but Cupra Australia is quick to point out that customers will get more for their money.
Cupra Ateca VZx
The price hikes mean the Leon hatch range will soon start from $45,190 and top out at $61,690, while the matching Formentor crossover will range from $51,990 to $65,790 – see the full price list below. The sole Ateca VZx SUV will rise to $63,490 (all prices exclude ORCs).
All three model lines will benefit from the addition of DAB+ digital radio, while the Formentor VZx will go one step further and gain a powered tailgate for all variants, along with the option of a new Akrapovic exhaust ($6300).
Other additions to the best-selling Cupra model’s options list include a new $2800 Leather and Camera Package – replacing the current Leather and Power Package – comprising Nappa leather upholstery, heated front seats, power seat adjustment with driver’s memory function and a 360-degree camera.
Leon VZ
Likewise, a $2550 Leather and Sound Package will become available for the Leon VZe (in place of the Leather Package), headlined by the inclusion of a nine-speak Beats premium audio system.
According to Cupra Australia product and planning boss Jeff Shafer, the MY24 announcement is being made ahead of time to give customers the option of lower prices and shorter wait times – given MY23 stock is “still arriving into the network” – or spending a bit more for extra equipment and waiting longer.
“Providing customers with an electric tailgate on every Formentor, a digital radio on every Leon, Formentor and Ateca, and the option of a more sonorous exhaust on our top-selling Formentor VZx delivers enhanced appeal for our customers,” he said.
