The Volkswagen Group increased its deliveries of all-electric vehicles in the first half of the year by 48 per cent year-on-year to 321,600 units. The BEV share of total deliveries rose to 7.4 per cent, after 5.6 per cent in the first six months of the previous year.
In the same period last year, 217,200 BEVs were delivered, the group recalled in the statement. The 321,600 e-cars now delivered by all Group brands represent an increase of 48 per cent.
The 48 per cent increase is an important comparative figure for deliveries by continent. In Europe, the VW Group was able to deliver 217,100 electric cars (H1 2022: 128,900), an increase of 68 per cent, which is stronger than the global comparison. In the USA, the increase was even 76 per cent with 29,800 vehicles. China, on the other hand, with “a particularly competitive market environment”, was below the previous year’s level with 62,400 BEVs – but only by two per cent, according to VW. “Recently, however, the trend here has also been positive,” Volkswagen said.
In the first quarter, the group had reported 141,000 e-cars delivered – especially in China, VW was then 25 per cent below the previous year. Consequently, Q2 was stronger than the opening quarter with 180,600 deliveries. Also on a quarterly basis, Europe is the most important e-market for VW with 118,900 units (+68.8 per cent), followed by China (41,000, +18.0 per cent), the USA (14,000, +55.7 per cent) and the rest of the world (6,700, +74.7 per cent).
The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand delivered 164,800 vehicles by the end of June, slightly more than half of all BEVs in the Group. It was followed by Audi with 75,600 vehicles (Group share 24 per cent), Skoda with 31,300 vehicles (Group share 10 per cent), Seat/Cupra with 18,900 vehicles (Group share 6 per cent), Porsche with 18,000 vehicles (Group share 6 per cent) and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles with 12,300 vehicles (Group share 4 per cent). What is remarkable about the list of brands is that Cupra has overtaken Porsche for the first time.

In terms of models, two VW brand series were also in the lead: the ID.4/ID.5 duo accounted for 101,200 units, followed by the ID.3 with 49,800 vehicles in the first half of the year. According to current reports, just under 28,000 of these ID.3s were registered in Europe. The MEB SUV Audi Q4 e-tron (incl. Sportback) follows in third place within the group, ahead of its sister model Skoda Enyaq (incl. Coupé with 48,000 and 31,300 vehicles respectively. The top 5 is completed by the Audi Q8 e-tron (incl. Sportback) with 19,500 vehicles – VW does not report any other models.
“With an increase in all-electric deliveries of around 50 percent in the first half of the year, the Volkswagen Group is systematically continuing its transformation. We are the market leader in Europe in this segment and have gained market share” says Hildegard Wortmann, member of the Extended Group Management Board for Sales.
According to the aforementioned reports, however, the Volkswagen brand is currently experiencing a massive problem with incoming orders: most of the vehicles delivered in the first half of the year were already ordered in 2022. Insiders were quoted as saying that incoming orders for some electric series vehicles had fallen to “close to zero”.
In the press release, the group states that the “Order bank in Western Europe remains good” at around 200,000 BEVs. However, in the Q1 delivery report it was still talking about “more than 260,000 BEVs”. Wortmann also confirms that there was a significant dip, but without giving any figures. “Since May, we have again seen an improved trend in incoming orders here, after a certain reluctance on the part of our customers at the start of the year due to reduced subsidy programs, partly long waiting times and high inflation,” the Audi and Group manager is quoted as saying. “In view of the recent significant reduction in delivery times, we expect this positive trend to continue in the coming months.”
