1987 CHEVY CORVETTE CHANGES & IMPROVEMENTS
The standard and only engine was the L98 5.7L (350) V8 with Tuned Port Injection (TPI). Last year it made 235hp. This year, thanks to roller lifers, the squeezed out another 5hp, bringing it up to 240hp with a 9.5:1 compression ratio. For the 1987 Chevy Corvette, a new Z52 performance option package was offered that included a heavy duty radiator and cooling fan, engine oil cooler, Bilstein shocks, larger 16 X 9.5” wheels, a larger front anti-sway (stabilizer) bar, and a 13:1 steering ratio. But the Z51 and Z52-optioned cars got additional chassis stiffening, originally designed for the convertibles, but added to coupes when ordered with the Z51 or Z52 packages. A new electronic tire pressure monitoring system was introduced but pulled from production after being installed in just 41 cars, with problems that wouldn’t get fixed until it was reintroduced on the ’89 model.

For the first time, it was possible to order a new Corvette, check off the option box “B2K”, and have your new Vette sent by the factory directly to Callaway Engineering in Connecticut to have a raft of high-performance modifications performed on the car, including installing 2 turbochargers on the stock Corvette 5.7 V8 pushing power up to 345hp. The $51,000 option had few takers, 123 bought Callaway Coupes and 65 bought Callaway Convertibles.
