Mazda Philippines seems to have found the right recipe for success when it comes to its two-door sportscar, the MX-5. Just today, its exclusive Philippine distributor has announced that they’ve managed to hit the 1,000-unit sales milestone mark.
Previously, Bermaz Auto Philippines, has made known that the Philippines is the largest Asian market of the MX-5 outside of Japan. In fact, the fourth-generation roadster, codenamed “ND” already managed to outsell all three previous generations—NA, NB, and NC combined a couple of years back.
Now, the fourth-generation MX-5 has managed to hit another milestone by actually crossing the 1,000-unit sales milestone by itself. The feat, which is around 7 years in the making, happened just last October. Cumulatively, the MX-5 ND, in both soft top and retractable fastback (RF) has managed to move 1,009 units.
Out of the 1,009 units, 548 units are the soft top (359 equipped with the 6-speed AT, 189 equipped with the 6-speed MT). The rest (461) are the RF with 404 going for the 6-speed AT and just 57 going for the 6-speed MT. Top three colors are Soul Red Crystal (362 units) followed by Machine Gray (166 units) and Snowflake White Pearl (92 units).
The current-generation MX-5 was
previewed for the Philippine market at the Manila International Auto Show in 2015
. It was then followed two years later with the
introduction of the RF variant
. In
2018
, the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine received a significant power bump from 160 to 184 horsepower.
In 2021, the distributor announced that cumulative sales of the NC and ND—the two MX-5 models launched when they took over the Mazda brand in 2012 reached 853 units. That same year, they pioneered the unique
“Build Your MX-5” personalization program
. Just a year later, they showcased the revised version of the sportscar which debuted a new handling technology called
Kinetic Posture Control or KPC
.
Throughout the stewardship of the Mazda brand under Bermaz, the country received several special or limited-edition variants of the MX-5 including
25 units of the MX-5 25th Anniversary Edition (NC)
,
30 units of the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition
,
24 units of the MX-5 Mazda 100 Years Edition
, and just recently, 30 units (and still going) of the
MX-5 Miata Club Philippines 25th Anniversary Edition
.
