The 2022 model year brings more new vehicles from Ford following 2021’s rugged Bronco SUV, smaller Bronco Sport SUV, all-electric Mustang Mach E and freshened F-150 pickup. Newcomers for 2022 include the F-150 Lightning electric pickup, the all-new Maverick compact pickup and a Bronco Raptor performance off-roader.
Along with these new models, others get updates worth noting — more vehicles, for example, are getting Ford’s Sync 4 operating system, as well as BlueCruise driver-assist tech that pairs hands-free lane centering with adaptive cruise control on certain roads.

Vehicle Debuts

A Bronco Raptor joins the F-150 Raptor in Ford’s U.S. lineup. Ford says the Bronco Raptor will start at $69,995, more than $21,000 above the priciest regular Bronco, and preorders will open in March. The off-road upgrades range from the immediately obvious — such as the heat-extractor hood and huge fender flares above the standard 37-inch off-road tires — to a Raptorization of the chassis, with more ground clearance and suspension travel, Dana axles and Fox semi-active shocks (we have more details here). Output from an upgraded turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 is still to be announced.

2022 F-150 Lightning
Generating the most buzz for 2022 is the all-electric F-150 Lightning full-size pickup, expected to arrive this spring. The new electric truck in most respects looks like and promises the capability of the conventional F-150, with four trim levels ranging from a $41,669-to-start work truck to a $92,569 Platinum luxury pickup. Novel features include Ford’s Intelligent Backup Power, a two-way power system that can use the truck’s charge as backup power for a home. Range and other details aren’t yet official, but Ford estimates ranges of 230 for the standard-range battery or 300 miles for the extended-range battery, towing up to 10,000 pounds, payload up to 2,000 pounds and a system output of 563 horsepower and 775 pounds-feet of torque for the top-of-the-line truck with dual-motor four-wheel drive. The Maverick five-passenger, four-door compact pickup is nearly a foot shorter than the mid-size Ford Ranger, has an affordable starting price of $21,490 and a standard four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that is EPA-rated for 37 mpg combined. Optional — and necessary if you want 4WD and a 4,000-pound maximum towing capacity — is a 250-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The formula seems to have worked: Ford had to cut off dealer orders for the hybrid in October 2021 and for the turbo last month. Cars
2022 GT
The limited-edition Ford GT goes into the final year of its 1,350-car run with a Ford GT ’64 Prototype Heritage Edition that honors the original 1964 GT40 prototypes with Wimbledon White paint and an Antimatter Blue hood, racing stripe and lettering. It also has loads of exposed carbon fiber (including wheels) and a cabin with carbon-fiber trim and blue Alcantara upholstery. The track-only Ford GT Mk II also ends in 2022 with its last 45 cars.
2022 Mustang
The coupe and convertible are little changed beyond three new appearance packages with their own trim, wheels and color schemes. There also are three new wheel options and six new paint colors.

The subcompact SUV carries over with no changes.
2022 Escape
The compact SUV carries over with no changes beyond three new paint colors.
2022 Edge
The mid-size, two-row SUV gets a new Black Appearance Package with black wheels and trim, and it follows some other SUVs (and even Toyota’s Sienna minivan) with an Adventure Package geared toward weekend soft-roading; it adds gray 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires as well as gray and black trim accents.

2022 Explorer
The mid-size, three-row SUV gets a new ST-Line trim level that’s similar to the Edge ST-Line. The package has the appearance of the Explorer ST performance model without the go-fast performance upgrades (or the higher ST price). The ST-Line has 20-inch aluminum wheels, integrated dual exhaust tips, black badging and an interior with Ford’s ActiveX seats. Power is the standard 300-hp four-cylinder, however, not the ST’s 400-hp, turbo V-6. In other changes, the performance ST gets a cheaper rear-wheel-drive version, and the 400-hp V-6 now comes standard in the Platinum and King Ranch trims.
2022 Bronco
Revived for the 2021 model year after a quarter-century absence (more in our review here), the rugged full-size SUV is little changed for 2022 but adds new options, including a front bumper with integrated tow hooks and foglights, a rear slide-out table for tailgating and structural tube doors. The off-road Sasquatch Package is newly offered on models with a manual transmission.

The compact SUV unveiled for 2021 carries over with minor changes to option packages and three new paint colors.

2022 Expedition and Expedition Max
Ford’s largest SUV, the body-on-frame Expedition with regular and long-wheelbase Max models, is freshened with cosmetic changes and two new trim levels. One is the more rugged Timberline, a package seen first with the 2021 Explorer Timberline. It includes tougher visual cues along with 33-inch all-terrain tires, more ground clearance, 4WD with a two-speed transfer case, a skid plate and its own suspension and steering. Also new is the Stealth Edition Performance Package cruiser with blacked-out trim and 22-inch black wheels. Both get a more powerful 440-hp version of the SUV’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6. New tech options include BlueCruise driver-assist tech, the standard Sync 4 media system on a 12-inch touchscreen display or an optional 15.5-inch touchscreen running Sync 4A.
2022 Mustang Mach-E
The all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV is mostly unchanged. A new Ice White Package glows with white paint and trim pieces, badges and wheel accents — and an interior with white trim and light gray upholstery. Other changes include an all-wheel drive option for the California Route 1 trim level and a black roof for GT models.
Pickups
2022 Ranger
The mid-size pickup mostly carries over but adds a Splash Edition with an orange and black hood, body graphics, black wheels and interior orange accents. Splash Limited Edition models are also available in a variety of limited-run exterior colors.
2022 F-150
The F-150 was freshened for the 2021 model year, but some updated features were not available until late in the year and are now offered for 2022, including an adaptive suspension, the Onboard Scales feature that estimates payload weight and the Smart Hitch feature that estimates trailer tongue weight. Otherwise, the truck mostly carries over with a few new appearance and utility package options.
Ford told Cars.com that the 2022 trucks are shipping with the BlueCruise driver-assist option. The hardware was offered on up-level versions of the 2021, and buyers were told they would get the needed software late in the year. Cars.com has not yet been able to get that update for the long-term 2021 F-150 we bought after naming the truck our Best of 2021. Ford told us the update for 2021 trucks should be available in the first quarter.

2022 F-150 Raptor
Ford’s wildest pickup, the F-150 Raptor off-roader, returned for the 2021 model year (pictured above) and a wilder Raptor R is expected to debut in 2022. No details have been announced other than the Raptor R will have a V-8 rather than the regular Raptor’s turbocharged V-6.
2022 F-Series Super Duty
The heavy-duty pickups have a new 12-inch touchscreen option with Sync 4 and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If chrome is not your thing, a new Lariat Sport Appearance Package includes a body-color grille, bumpers and mirrors, and XLT models now offer a Black Appearance Package. King Ranch and Platinum trim levels get standard 4×4. Super Duty trucks with single rear wheels now have standard 20-inch cast aluminum wheels instead of 18-inchers.
Vans
2022 Ford Transit Connect
The Transit Connect Wagon small passenger van and its cargo version carry over with a new dark wheel option and new fixed second-row glass and roof rack options for the cargo van.
2022 Ford Transit
The large passenger and cargo van line mostly carries over, but there is a new available 12-inch center touchscreen with Sync 4. All versions now offer a proximity key and Reverse Brake Assist with rear sensors and reverse automatic braking.
