Explore the engine options afforded you when you consider buying a new BMW 1 Series. The current generation offers both diesel and petrol options with varying levels of power output.
The BMW 1 Series is the undisputed entry point for new BMW ownership. Since its launch in 2004, the BMW 1 Series has appealed to those with aspirations of owning a 3 or 5 Series, but sensible enough to know that those models are out of their price range. The BMW 1 Series is now in its third generation and the initial E87 (E81, E82, E88) was replaced by the more modern F20 and F21 in 2011 but more importantly, retained its unique selling point; its front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. That was until, the latest F40 generation which changed things drastically.
The F40 series did away with the rear-wheel drive format, much to the dismay of the BMW purists, and adopted a front-wheel drive arrangement with a transversely mounted engine. BMW’s all-wheel drive system, xDrive, is also offered for the first time in the 1 Series and remains a drawcard for the M135i version. The F40 1 Series is also only available as a 5-door hatchback with more traditional hatchback styling elements.

Customers can choose from three engine options in the F40 BMW 1 Series, two petrol options and a single diesel. Overseas markets have the choice of two diesels, but locally we only receive the single offering. While there may only be the choice of two petrol engines, the power outputs differ depending on the variant in question.
