BMW execs preview first M3 wagon via YouTube as build-up to world debut continues
The slow-burn BMW M3 Touring teaser campaign continues this week with an eight-minute YouTube video that explains the lineage of the high-performance wagon and culminates in two brand executives revealing its uncamouflaged rear-end from beneath a darkened sheet.
This isn’t actually the first time we’ve seen the Touring’s curvaceous rear-end undisguised, with the same silver prototype previously lending its booty (pun intended) to an uncredited cameo in a December BMW M advert.
Given it’s the same vehicle, again on display here are details like the gloss-black roof spoiler and roofrails, aggressive rear diffuser, quad exhaust outlets and skirt-mounted winglets.
According to BMW M development boss Dirk Hacker, the brand’s ‘decision makers’ said “the car is so brilliant we can’t deprive our customers of the chance to buy it”.
That’s something of a contrast to the sentiment 20 years ago when the E46 M3 Touring concept was mothballed due to the extreme engineering complexities involved in converting a coupe platform into a wagon.
After Hacker and BMW’s head of prototype production Hans Rahn explain the car’s unique design cues and then the challenges and ultimate demise of the original M3 Touring concept, the covers come off the first M3 Touring just over five minutes into the 7:52 video.
No extra titbits of information about the new model are revealed in the video, but for anyone not familiar with the evolving story so far, the M3 Touring will be revealed in July as part of BMW’s MY23 model line-up.
Likely to be an all-wheel drive, auto-only model , the inaugural 2023 BMW M3 Touring will be powered by the same cracking 375kW/650Nm force-fed straight-six as Competition versions of the existing M3 sedan and M4 coupe and convertible.
