In 2024, BMW is set to expand its 5 Series lineup with the much-anticipated 5 Series Touring. This unveiling follows the confirmation of the M5 Touring and the recent introduction of the sedan variant, emphasizing BMW’s commitment to providing a comprehensive range of options for customers. Codenamed G61, the 5-Series Touring is set to be a versatile addition to the lineup.
The teaser images from BMW provide a sneak peek of what to expect from the Bavarian wagon. While details are limited, the images reveal the car’s silhouette and its distinctive head and tail lights. Notably, the teaser also showcases an illuminated grille, a feature seen on BMW’s new i5 electric saloon, hinting at the company’s dedication to embracing electric mobility. One key piece of information from BMW is that the 5 Series Touring is set to launch in the spring of 2024. What’s more, this model will inherit the same engine options available for the saloon, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants, providing customers with a range of choices to suit their preferences and driving needs.
In case you missed it: BMW 5 Series Touring Could Look Like This
Underpinning all versions of the 5 Series Touring is the same CLAR platform, which means there won’t be significant design differences between the combustion engine and electric variants. Both will share a similar aesthetic, inside and out. The M5 Touring, however, will stand out with its distinctive features, including wider fenders, a quad exhaust system, and M-specific kidneys with horizontal slats, marking it as the high-performance variant in the range.
The reintroduction of the M5 Touring in the 5 Series lineup is a notable event, reviving a beloved model last seen in the mid-2000s with a naturally aspirated V10 engine in the form of the E61. The new M5 Touring is expected to inherit the powertrain from the impressive XM, boasting a 480 kW plug-in hybrid 4,4-litre V8 engine.
In a market heavily dominated by SUVs, the Bavarian wagon offers a compelling alternative for those seeking a blend of style, practicality, and performance. Time will tell if the SUV-besotted South African market is set to receive any.
