The generation of electricity for mobile charging points by means of so-called “airborne wind turbines” is the subject of an unusual project by Volkswagen Group Charging and the Brandenburg-based company Enerkite as part of the federally funded ‘Technohyb’ project.
Within the ‘Autarkic Mobile Charging Infrastructure’ sub-project, which will run until the end of 2024, Enerkite is to provide flying wind turbines as part of an independent charging infrastructure with regenerative power generation and ensure that these turbines are optimised for efficiency.
In the flying wind turbines, the so-called wing, a kind of kite, flies in the wind in paths in the shape of an eight, and thus pulls ropes from drums of a ground station with high force. A generator on the ground then converts the rotation of the drums into electricity.
