VW wants to reserve its classic names for the true successors of the original.
According to media reports, Volkswagen is developing a new entry-level electric hatchback, which could be called ‘ID.1’. The new urban electric hatchback will be positioned below the production version of the recently unveiled ID.2all concept, which itself is expected to be priced at around £22,500.
The upcoming Volkswagen ID.1 will get a new electric platform that will also underpin similar models from its sibling brands like Skoda & Cupra. However, details of the new architecture are yet to be revealed.
Volkswagen is also yet to finalise the name for its new entry-level EV. The brand is contemplating either the ‘ID.1’ or ID.Polo nameplate. However, VW wants to reserve its classic names for the true successors of the original.
In terms of powertrain, being an urban EV, the VW ID.1 will get a relatively small battery and a lower range. The VW Group is also working on developing unified cell technology, which could be used across its brands and help reduce costs. The chemistry will vary though, among each tier, allowing entry-level EVs to use cheaper materials with lower energy density and slightly slower charging times.
Head of Volkswagen, Thomas Schafer, also hinted that the models could be built at the brand’s production facility in India, where the cost of manufacturing is comparatively cheaper.
