Though a VW Tiguan EV isn’t available on the market just yet, it’s only a question of time. This topic is an internal discussion at the Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, as product planners opportunistically review the future of their brand icons while expanding the VW ID. line-up at the same time.
During a VW ID. Buzz media drive in early 2022, Klaus Zyciora, the Head of Design at Volkswagen Group, said he will fight for a new VW Golf EV, YouTube channel Autogefühl’s Thomas Majchrzak revealed in a video. Oliver Blume, Volkswagen Group CEO, has now hinted that the future Golf EV may be joined by the VW Tiguan EV
The Volkswagen brand is currently examining how it can take icons such as the Golf or the Tiguan into the electric future.

The third-generation gasoline-powered VW Tiguan program (2023 launch) is almost complete, and an electric version is unlikely. As the SUV enters its fourth generation, a VW Tiguan EV may become a reality. It may be 7-8 years before we see a VW Tiguan EV on the road, but at least we now know it is a real possibility and not just wild speculation! In case of this future, newcomers such as the ID.3 and ID.4 will likely sit above Volkswagen’s best-sellers as premium options.
In a conversation with Autocar in November 2022, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer said that discontinuing iconic names like Golf “would be crazy” and that the ID.3 isn’t a Golf successor but a model positioned above it. Perhaps the company considers the same equation for the Tiguan and ID.4 and that is why is considering a VW Tiguan EV.
Schäfer said that Volkswagen “might have ID. Golf,” and we think it may launch an ID. Tiguan in the same vein. The Tiguan, T-Roc, and Golf have firmly established themselves, and as VW charts its course into a zero-emissions future, we believe the managers in Wolfsburg will figure out a way to take them along for the ride.

For the record, the Tiguan is Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide. In 2021, it recorded 598,656 units, which was four times higher than the ID.4’s annual sales that year (134,319 units). Of all the different models that Volkswagen has introduced in the 21st century, the Tiguan is likely the most successful and stable product in terms of sales and profitability.
The ID.3 SUV (rendered) should offer a higher driving position, besides better room for luggage and rear seat occupants as compared to the hatchback when it arrives around 2025.
VW ID.3 SUV to fill the void
In an announcement on December 7, 2022, Schäfer indicated Volkswagen plans to launch a new electric compact SUV that belongs to the Tiguan segment and make it at the company’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany. In all likeliness, he was referring to the rumored VW ID.3 SUV, expected in 2025.
The ID.3 SUV is likely to fill the void of an affordable electric compact SUV in the German lineup until it is replaced by the VW Tiguan EV (VW ID. Tiguan). Though it is a slim possibility, Volkswagen could name the model ID. Tiguan instead of hanging around until the fourth-gen Tiguan is here.

There is room for a compact SUV positioned below the ID.4, an accessible option for regular consumers who aren’t coming in for the latest technology or gizmos. Here’s where the all-electric Tiguan could find its place in the line-up.
