BERLIN: Volkswagen is expanding its ID family with the ID5, set to roll up beside the ID4 and ID3 at the beginning of 2022.
At around €47,000 (RM227,000), VW’s first SUV coupe is a more premium car and is set to cost around €2,000 (RM9,631) more than ID4, with which it shares many technical features.
But the ID family’s new top car is also set to add a few cherries on top and is bringing several new features, including the ability to overtake cars automatically when you turn on the indicator.
The car can also remember manual parking manoeuvres and subsequently carry them out on its own. Volkswagen is also adding a new adaptive voice control system.
Stretched to 4.61 metres and with flowing lines, the ID5 offers a similar amount of space as the ID4. Although the rear-seat passengers lose some headroom, the luggage compartment is the same size in the basic configuration at 549 litres.
Only when the rear seat is folded down do ID5 owners pay the price for the more elegant rear and have to be content with 1,561 litres, according to VW.
The ID5 is offered in three performance levels: In addition to two rear-wheel drive variants with 174hp and 204hp, there is also the all-wheel drive GTX. The latter has a second motor up front to bring it to 299hp, VW says.
This top model can accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in 6.3 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 180kph. The other two models can reach 160kph.
The battery is always the same and has a usable capacity of 77kWh. Depending on the variant, this is enough for 480km to 520km, VW promises.
Although the ID5 is built on the same platform as the other ID models, the SUV coupe is a little more advanced. For example, its software status not only allows for online updates, but for new smart features to be purchased.
In addition, the ID5 can also be charged two ways, meaning you can use the car to power household devices if needed.
