Blimey, VW works quickly doesn’t it? Having announced just a few hours ago that it plans to unveil a Polo-priced electric car, here’s a concept that previews a production version set to arrive in 2025.
Now, the ID.2all that you see above isn’t actually something that was hastily cooked up today after boss Thomas Schäfer made the announcement at the annual press conference this morning, but it is a concept that has been rapidly brought to life – he only took over as CEO in July 2022 and design boss Andreas Mindt joined from Bentley at the start of February 2023.
And we’re liking the work that Mindt has done in that short space of time. We’re told the ID.2all previews a ‘new Volkswagen design strategy’ that Mindt says “is based on the three pillars of stability, likability and excitement”. Strong and stable seems to be the messaging then, and that usually works out alright, doesn’t it?
We’re told that the design includes a ‘friendly face’ and a ‘confident smile’, while the straight sides portray stability and the C-pillar is an evolution of the one on the original Mk1 Golf. We’d love a bit more retro-ness thrown in there.
Underneath the conservative styling is the VW Group’s evolved MEB Entry platform, and unlike all of the current MEB platformed cars, the ID.2all is front-wheel drive. Yep, the concept is powered by a 223bhp electric motor mounted on the front axle that should allow for a 0-100km/h sprint of under 7.0 seconds. Worth noting here that Cupra’s upcoming UrbanRebel claims the same power output and 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. We don’t know the size of the battery in the ID.2all concept or in the versions that’ll hit roads in 2025, but we are told that VW is aiming for a range in the region of 450km. Top speed will be 99mph, while a DC fast charge will be able to get you from 10 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes.
Volkswagen says the ID.2all will be ‘as spacious as a Golf and as inexpensive as a Polo. For scale, the concept is four metres long, 1.8 metres wide and wears 20-inch wheels, while inside you’ve got seating for five and a hefty 490-litre boot. Very practical. Also, you’ll have noticed that it’s not an SUV – hurrah! Although a ‘compact electric SUV’ will arrive on the same platform in 2026 – boo!
There’s good news inside the ID.2all though, because look – those are actual buttons for the climate control. Maybe VW has been listening to our feedback after all? Those buttons sit below the 12.9-inch central infotainment display (which is paired with a 10.9-inch digital dash and a head-up display) and we’re specifically told that they’re illuminated. This immediately makes the ID.2all better than the ID.3. What on earth were they thinking with those silly sliders? Plus, the ID.2all gets a little iDrive-style controller for the touchscreen and actual buttons on the steering wheel.
But anyway, let’s not get too bogged down with the Mk8 Golf/ID.3 rant again. The rest of the ID.2all interior includes clean surfaces, more straight lines and ‘numerous high-value technologies from larger ID. models’. To that end, there’s electric massage seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 230V socket for powering your electronics. There’s also VW’s Travel Assist cruise control and fancy IQ.Light tech for the headlights.
But hold fire with your price comments, because while unveiling the ID.2all, VW also confirmed that it is still working on a smaller EV. If that isn’t called the ID.1, we’ll eat our sustainably produced, recyclable hats…
