Volkswagen has introduced its new ID. flagship, the ID.7 electric sedan will be launched first in Europe and China later this year and will take on the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. Volkswagen also claims that the new car will have a range of 700 kilometres on a single charge.
The ID.7 is about five metres long and has a wheelbase of 2,966mm and it doesn’t appear all that different from its ID. siblings. Its sedan body style makes it seem sleeker and sits much lower. The LED headlamp unit is likewise thin, with an integrated DRL horizontal bar that flows towards the Volkswagen logo in the grille’s centre.
The roofline bends into the boot, which appears to make the boot like it was rear-ended. The ID 7 receives a full-width LED light bar at the back, a fastback-like roofline, and a pretty neat dual-tone rear bumper.
The ID.7 will be available in two variants when it hits the market: Pro and Pro S. The Standard Pro model will be powered by an 82-kWh battery pack with a range of around 615 kilometres. The Pro S, on the other hand, will have a slightly larger 91-kWh battery pack that is projected to go 700km on a single charge.
A 286PS and 545Nm electric motor will send power to the back wheels. According to Volkswagen, the arrangement would have a charging capability of up to 200kW. A more powerful model with all-wheel drive is also expected to debut later.
Volkswagen has gone for a minimalistic approach in the cabin, with parallel flowing horizontal lines dominating the dashboard, as well as a massive 15-inch touchscreen display with easy touch controls for common activities, making it safer to use. The digital instrument cluster is elegantly merged into two parallel running lines on the dashboard and VW has also a new augmented reality heads-up display.
The interior, like other EVs, is kept clean and simple, with no unduly sophisticated technology. A panoramic sunroof, a new Climatronic temperature control system, Harman Kardon 14 speaker system, heated and ventilated seating choices, and optional massage functions are among the creature luxuries.
The ID.7 will be manufactured in both Germany and China. It will be available in Europe and China before it eventually goes on sale in North America.
