VW teams up with Jayco to offer Crafter campervan through Aussie Volkswagen dealerships
Volkswagen is back on the #vanlife trend, unveiling a new campervan built in partnership with Jayco that will go on sale in Australia through VW dealerships from July this year.
Unveiled at the Caravan Camping Holiday Supershow in Sydney this week, the 2022 Volkswagen Crafter Kampervan is based on the long-wheelbase, all-wheel drive Crafter van and will be offered in three variants – Kampervan, Kampervan Style and Kampervan All-Terrain, the latter adding a host of Seikel off-roading gear.
Pricing is still to be revealed for the Kampervan line-up, which will be positioned above the Volkswagen Caddy California (from $55,690 plus on-road costs) and Multivan California (from $87,290).
Every Kampervan model will come powered by the same 130kW/410Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine found in the Crafter van, sending power to all four wheels via VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.
Dubbed the ‘halo’ vehicle of Volkswagen’s growing lifestyle range, the Crafter Kampervan measures up at 6.8 metres in length and 2.0 metres wide, kitted out with a range of accessories that make it fit for adventures straight off the showroom floor.
These include a pair of water tanks (fresh and waste), a full internal bathroom with a toilet and shower, reverse-cycle air-conditioning, TV with DVD player, LED lighting, an external awning, and more.
There’s also a kitchen that offers a two-burner gas cooktop, microwave, refrigerator, sink, bench and storage space.
The entry-level Kampervan comes with black steel wheels, rubber floor mats, the option of three solid paint finishes, hill descent control, a four-tonne GVM upgrade, mechanical diff lock and swivel seats for the driver and passenger.
Moving into the Kampervan Style brings alloy wheels, seven paint options (including two-tone), a heated windscreen, LED headlights with cornering and daytime running lights, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, navigation and a headlamp washer system.
Finally, the Kampervan All-Terrain comes lifted (+30mm) and adds steel wheels fitted with off-road rubber, extra underbody protection and a snorkel.
Although the Crafter Kampervan is designed to sleep three people, each van offers four seats for travel.
The all-new Crafter Kampervan range will be covered by Volkswagen’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and is said to have been extensively tested at the Anglesea proving ground in Victoria.
“Just as Walkinshaw took the Amarok to the next level, Jayco as the leading brand in its field is making the Crafter Kampervan the perfect choice for those who want to drive a brilliantly engineered vehicle – then live and sleep comfortably across endless Australian destinations,” said Volkswagen Australia’s brand director for commercial vehicles, Ryan Davies.
Pricing and final specifications will be confirmed before sales commence mid-year.
