Volkswagen Announces All New Tiguan, RM7k Bonus for Early Bird Bookings

Kuala Lumpur, 01 March 2017 – Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) announced today that the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan is available for early bird bookings ahead of its launch which is due in a few weeks, and that early birds get to enjoy an RM7,000 bonus for a limited number of units.

The all-new Tiguan will be available in two variants, and prices are estimated at RM149,000 for the Trendline variant and RM169,000 for the higher specification Highline variant.

This second generation Tiguan has grown somewhat in terms of dimensions much to the delight of customers who have complained that the previous model was a little on the small side, according to overseas reports. Some overseas media also said the all-new Tiguan narrows the gap that existed between the Tiguan and its much bigger sibling, the Touareg. Built on the VW MQB platform, the Tiguan is now longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. In terms of dimensions, the Tiguan has a 77mm longer wheelbase, (2,681mm versus 2,604mm) – however, overall length is only extended by 60mm due to some reductions in the overhanging areas. Overall width is also increased by 30mm – and standing on a widened front track (+20mm) the all-new Tiguan looks more ‘balanced’ with the resultant wider stance. In terms of size, the Tiguan is now comparable to its nearest competitors. Most of the increased space went into interior space, and the Tiguan boasts of ‘best in class’ luggage capacity.

The overall weight, however, is lighter by 76kg (now 1,485 kg versus 1,551 kg for the outgoing model) through the use of lightweight materials, which includes the use of aluminium parts plus an aluminium bonnet. The overall weight has a direct effect on fuel efficiency, and the new Tiguan is the lightest in its class.

The body of the new Tiguan is of an all new design, and in my opinion, is a vast improvement over its predecessor. Whereas the first generation Tiguan took some design cues from the larger Touareg, the new model has lost the rounded curves and the ‘fat’ waistline with a narrow top is gone, replaced with more angular edges. A new front mask that is more upright and is wider than the old model gives the new Tiguan a fresh and more elegant look, and the rounded rear end has been replaced by more upright structures. Overall, I would say the new Tiguan is more appealing to the eyes.

1.4 litre engine packs a huge wallop for the new VW Tiguan

The all-new Tiguan for Malaysia has received EEV status, and is powered by VW’s 1.4 litre DOHC, 150 horsepower turbocharged engine that features both direct and multi-port injection with benefits in both power output and fuel efficiency. Maximum torque is rated at 250Nm, available in full from as low as 1,500 rpm through to 3,500 rpm. Coupled to a wet clutch 6-speed DSG, the Tiguan is available only in Front-Wheel Drive configuration at the moment. There is an all-wheel drive version with the 2.0 litre engine from the Golf GTi which is more powerful, but VPCM has no plans at the present moment to bring that variant in. If the predecessor’s 1.4 litre engine is anything to judge by, the new Tiguan promises to be even more fun to drive. Acceleration from zero to 100km/h is claimed at 8.9 seconds, a highly respectable time, and top speed is claimed at 198 km/h.

Official fuel consumption is rated at 8.6 l/100 km for urban, 5.6 l/100km for extra-urban, while combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.7 l/100 km.

Within its smartly-designed interior, the all-new Tiguan comes with the same luxurious comforts found in Volkswagen’s other premium models, such as the Active Info Display, 8-inch Discover Media infotainment system, and 3-zone Climatatronic air-conditioning system.

Five colours will be available – Pure White, Deep Black, Atlantic Blue, Tungsten Silver and Iridium Grey.

The all-new Tiguan will be on display at the Volkswagen Sales Tour happening at the New Wing of 1 Utama Shopping Centre from 1 March 2017 till 5 March 2017.
