“Let’s give them many teasers.” was clearly the outcome of the a string of many marketing meetings had at Volkswagen AG leading up to the announcement of the all-new Volkswagen Amarok.
Well consider us sufficiently teased – VW has released yet another set of teaser images of the new bakkie, which will share many components with the highly-anticipated new Ford Ranger.
VW refers to these as “near-production sketches” and so while they might offer us a proper glimpse into the styling of the new bakkie, it’s not likely that design elements such as exaggerated fender arches and wispy-thin low-profile tyres will make it through to the final production model. Either way, it’s not likely, after all of these teasers, that there will be too many surprises once the final version of the new Amarok is unveiled which we can expect to take place mid-2022.
Albert-Johann Kirzinger, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles head of design said, “We emphasise the different, expressive front designs of our pickup with a charismatic Amarok signature that is also found with very large letters on the cargo box at the rear and is sported very proudly by the Amarok.”
The styling bar as a visual extension of the double cab in the cargo box once again gives the Amarok’s body dynamic, aerodynamic and very strong proportions.”
As seems to be the trend with almost all new vehicles these days, the incoming model will be marginally bigger than the model which it replaces. In terms of powertrain, there will most certainly be a big, beefy V6 turbodiesel mill, as well as the high likelihood of turbocharged four-cylinder units a la Ford for various markets. These new sketches also show us a host of driver-assistance technology which Volkswagen claim to be new to this segment, much in the same way that Ford has with the T6 Ranger.
Along with an increase in size, there is expected to be an increase in ground clearance as well, which will certainly add to the bakkie’s presumably brilliant off-road ability.
Built locally alongside the all-new Ford Ranger, there’s a good chance that the new Amarok will be available locally before year-end.
VWSA recently said in a statement, “The Amarok’s world premiere and global media launch will both take place in South Africa later this year.”
