FRANKFURT: Volkswagen said today that it would reach a key target in the production of electric cars earlier than previously anticipated.
The German automaker will have produced one million electric vehicles by the end of 2023, two years ahead of schedule.
It now expects to have produced 1.5 million electric cars by 2025, it said.
With the world premiere of the new all-electric ID.3 in September and the start of production at the Zwickau electric vehicle plant in November, Volkswagen has already reached major milestones.
The year 2020 will be dominated by the market introduction of the ID. family. The first ID.3 cars will appear on Europe’s roads in the summer.

So far, Volkswagen’s best-selling electric car has been the e-Golf with 104,000 units delivered, followed by the Golf GTE (51,000), Passat Variant GTE (42,000) and e-up! (21,000). Half of the customers opted for a battery electric vehicle and the other half for a plug-in hybrid.
In mid-December, the Volkswagen brand delivered the 250,000th electric car since the introduction of the e-up! in 2013.
The 250,000th car, a “Pure White” e-Golf, was presented to one Sandra Fleischer, who took delivery of the car at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg.
Since 2013, the brand’s electrified model range has been continually expanded in the following years: e-Golf and Golf GTE followed in 2014, the Passat GTE and Passat Variant GTE in 2015.
Since 2018, the Passat and Tiguan have been available as plug-in hybrids in China, where they were followed by battery electric versions of the Bora and Lavida this year.
Over the next few years, Volkswagen intends to become the world market leader in e-mobility and is investing €33 billion in these efforts throughout the group by 2024, including €11 billion in the Volkswagen brand.
