2022 Volkswagen T-Roc: what is it?
Essentially a Golf on stilts, the T-Roc is a crossover that sits above the Polo-sized T-Cross and below the bigger Tiguan in Volkswagen’s SUV line-up. Since going on sale in 2017 it’s become a hit with families who want the space of the evergreen Golf but with the added practicality and safety of having a raised ride height.
As this is only a midlife facelift changes to design are not exactly dramatic: we can see the grille now has just one bar across it, instead of the two the current model has, and the lights both front and rear have been tweaked a little.
The model pictured here is the R-Line version, which is just a more aggressive-looking trim level and not to be confused with the full fat T-Roc R, which gets the potent 2.0-litre Turbo engine of the Golf R. We can see that the front spoiler and splitter have both been beefed up compared to the outgoing R-Line model.
Volkswagen also sells a T-Roc Cabriolet which comes with a retractable roof, and it’s receiving the same mild updates as its hardtop sibling.
Although our snappers couldn’t get close enough to shoot the interior, the new T-Roc will get a larger infotainment screen as well as a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display as standard.
2022 Volkswagen T-Roc: what is it powered by?
We expect the same engines used in the current model to carry over, which means you’ll be able to choose from two diesels – 115hp and 150hp – and three petrols which range in power from 110hp to 150hp.
As we mentioned, the range-topping T-Roc R gets the 320hp 2.0-litre turbo engine found in cars like the Golf R and Audi SQ2.
Some rumours are floating around that VW will add some mild hybrid tech to the engines, but as yet that is unconfirmed. It wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility to see a plug-in hybrid make an appearance as part of this facelift too.
2022 Volkswagen T-Roc: when will it be on sale?
Very soon, judging by how complete this test prototype is. We expect a full reveal of the car to happen in the coming weeks, which means you’ll be able to place an order before the end of the year.
2022 Volkswagen T-Roc: how much will it cost?
Volkswagen is yet to confirm pricing, but we don’t expect it to rise much from the current starting point of £24,185. Prices should start around the £25,000 mark.
