2022 Volkswagen ID.5: What is it?
It is now written in law that if you produce an SUV, a coupe version must follow it. OK, so we're joking, but it does seem like every SUV has a sleeker-roofed counterpart these days. Hence, the full-electric Volkswagen ID.4 SUV is getting this coupe-look ID.5 version.
That often means a slight penalty in terms of rear headroom and overall boot space, although there are examples of coupe SUVs getting very close, so we shouldn't expect the space inside to be dramatically reduced.
And you are getting an EV SUV with its own distinct character in the ID.5, that sloping roofline giving it a sportier look, plus a small boot spoiler. Oh, and some fake exhaust surrounds on this particular mule. Sigh.
2022 Volkswagen ID.5: What is it powered by?
The likelihood is that the ID.5 will get the very same battery and motor combinations as the ID.4. That will eventually mean either a 52kWh or 77kWh battery with a single motor mounted on the rear axle.
However, VW recently announced that its performance EVs will be called GTX, and we expect the ID.5 to get a GTX version with a motor on each axle, bringing more power and grip.
The ID.5 will probably be able to cover around 300 miles with its bigger battery fitted. Based on the ID.4, it should be able to accept 125kW charging too.
2022 Volkswagen ID.5: When will it be on sale?
VW is yet to reveal when the ID.5 will go on sale, but we think it'll be revealed towards the end of this year and go on sale early on in 2022 in the UK.
2022 Volkswagen ID.5: How much will it cost
VW hasn't commented on prices for the ID.5, but given the ID.4 costs from around £40,000 with its 77kWh batter, we think it's safe to assume the ID.5's sleeker styling will command a small premium. A starting price of around £42,000 would therefore be a safe bet.
The smaller 52kWh battery ID.4 is yet to go on sale in the UK, but we expect it to cost around £5000 less, and that would translate to the ID.5.
The Kia e-Niro starts from around £30,000 after the Government plug-in grant, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E starts from around £40,000.
