2022 Ford Ranger: what is it?
The Ford Ranger pickup truck is a very familiar sight in the UK, pop along to any building site or lumber yard and you’re bound to spot one.
Just like the Transit van, the Ranger has a reputation for being a hard-as-nails workhorse which can also double as a family run-around outside of business hours, which is part of the motivation behind Ford introducing a plug-in hybrid model for the next generation.
Both of the test mules our photographers have captured being put through warm weather testing in southern Europe appear to be wearing a yellow sticker, normally only seen on PHEV prototypes.
We can also see new C-shaped headlights as well as an all-new grille. While we couldn’t get close enough to snatch a picture of the cabin, the interior is set to be given a significant overhaul, with rumours of a new 12-inch infotainment system on its way.
This new generation of Ranger will share most of its underpinnings and hardware with the Volkswagen Amarok. The project is being led by Ford with some input from VW.
2022 Ford Ranger: what is it powered by?
The PHEV model, which will be the first electrified Ranger ever, is expected to marry a 2.3-litre petrol engine with two electric motors to produce a combined 362bhp and 680Nm of torque, making it the most powerful Ranger to go on sale in the UK.
At the moment the most potent version UK buyers can get is a 210bhp 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel, an engine which is expected to be carried over into the new generation.
More economical versions of the same engine which are down-tuned to 128bhp and 168bhp are also thought to be on offer.
2022 Ford Ranger: when will it be on sale?
As you can see from our pictures these test mules are pretty close to being the finished article, so we won’t have to wait much longer for the official unveiling.
That said, the new Ranger probably won’t appear in showrooms until early 2022.
2022 Ford Ranger: how much will it cost?
The all-new PHEV Ranger will almost certainly be the most expensive in the line-up and could cost as much as £50,000, which is a little more than the Ranger Raptor currently costs.
The rest of the range will probably cost a little more than the current generation, but not much, so we expect prices to start around the £25,000 mark.
