2022 Ford Puma ST mild hybrid: what is it?
Ford has announced it is heading to the 2022 World Rally Championship with a new car – a plug-in hybrid Puma.
It looks like hybrid power will make it into the road-going Puma ST too, although it'll be a mild hybrid system for the ST.
The Puma ST in these images looks identical to the current model, but the giveaway is the yellow sticker on the rear screen which lets us know there is hybrid tech inside.
2022 Ford Puma ST mild hybrid: what is it powered by?
Unlike the Puma WRC car, which has a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine, electric motor and a small battery that can be charged via a plug, this road-going Puma ST will only have mild-hybrid tech,
That means an ISG or Integrated Starter Generator that store energy recouped from the engine and brakes to help out with a boost during acceleration.
This likely be attached to the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that currently produces 197hp. There are no confirmed figures yet, but we expect to see a modest hike in power.
Of course, the current 1.0-litre petrol engine already available in lesser Pumas already has mild-hybrid tech.
2022 Ford Puma ST mild hybrid: when will it be on sale?
We have no confirmed dates, but we expect Ford will revealed this new mild-hybrid Puma ST alongside the Puma WRC car competing in 2022.
2022 Ford Puma ST mild hybrid: how much will it cost?
There are no confirmed prices for this new Puma ST just yet, but we don't expect the price to climb much from the £28,000 it costs currently.
